1889-S Morgan opinion of grade!

16 posts in this topic

It looks to me like an upper AU coin with PL surfaces.

I agree if its real

Something just doesn't look right on the reverse

"Trust" Looks funny

"S" Mint mark if you straightened the coin would be almost on its side

The Left Star is worn and the right Star looks wrong and is fully unworn ...

I'd guess AU55 and semi-prooflike. The reverse looks perfectly fine to me.

You would be contrarian to anything I say anyway Mark :)

I expect it now and hold no malice towards you :roflmao:

If that were true, I would have disagreed about the coin looking "real" (shrug)

It is "real". From my research a VAM-2 (S mintmark leans to the left), but don't know if a VAM-2 adds any value. The coin is flashy. Will see what the grading services say. Yes, the hit on the cheek is a distraction, but it is not nearly as bad as the scan shows.

I can think of a few :)

He got it from an estate so he probably paid pennies on the dollar

If he wants to turn it over, people are getting leary of uncertified coins

Its a KEY coin to the series at 700,000 made

Some peole want AU grades instead of the more expensive MS graded KEY coins

although MS grades surprisingly are not that expensive - I saw on Ebay a MS62PL for $265

I wouldn't think the cost of the coin would be nearly as relevant as its value, and the value doesn't appear to be great.

Also, apparently we disagree regarding what a "KEY" coin to the series is - I've never never heard or thought of that date as being a "KEY".

I relate key coins to being low production numbers which may be faulty thinking on my part as the "S" mint 1889 seems to be fairly available at the low production numbers made. Similar to the "CC" of the same year.

We all know how hard the "CC" is to get in untouched and unplayed with condition

I am actually looking at a "CC" in a VF20 which looks all of that and more ( not for grade but of originality )

I will make a new post on that coin looking for opines.

From Vam World:

1889-S VAM-2 Far Date, S Tilted Left

2 III2 2 - C3b (Far Date, S Tilted Left) (188) I-2 R-3

Obverse III2 2 - Date set further right than normal. Closed and open 9.

Reverse C3b - Mint mark centered and tilted to the left.

Grade: EF45 to AU55 Depending on % of mint luster that remains!

The scan does not do this coin justice. It has blinding mirrors as good as the flash as my Morgan PF-65 DCAM I have in my collection. I expect this one will grade out at least a 62-DMPL. Too bad it is baggy, but what do you want from a San Francisco Morgan from 1889.

I think it is a VAM-2....can't find any info regarding any extra value the VAM-2 may add.
