Hi,

I'm a comic collector who knows nothing about coins. I have a bunch of US Proof Sets dating from 1975-2000 that my mom bought for me thru the years. Are these worth anything more than the face value? Are they worth slabbing? Or are they the coin equivalent of Modern comics? They are all untouched and still in their original packaging. Forgive my ignorance and I appreciate any thing you can tell me about them.

Thanks,

Casey

There are worth more than face value. If you have 1999 Silver set(red box) it is worth a little over $300. Just search ebay and you can see the selling price.

Are they worth slabbing?

Not really....it will not really increase the value. Most of the time on eBay you can buy the coins for abot $9 already slabbed. If you get a PF70UC it will be worth more. But that is the luck of the grade...you never know!!

Or are they the coin equivalent of Modern comics?

Basically

1979 t2 proof sets (open s) are worth sending if the sba is a t2. the sba alone will pay for the grading. ive done 12 sets in 08'. some of the silver sets as stated above are worth the grading if good enough.

and yes most are equal to modern books :)

Thanks, guys. That is what I thought. I'll need to look thru them and do some research. I'll probably keep them as they do look nice and display them if I get the room to do so.

As Schatzy stated, look at your 1983 dime for the "S" mark. I'm not sure if you have any other eligible sets for the error. And your 1999 silver set is worth a bundle. As for the others, you’re not looking at a fortune unless you can get some PR70DCams out of the coins individually. Good Luck!! (thumbs u

bsshog,

On those prices for the 93, 95, and 97 silver sets, were those for just the regular silver proof sets or the Premier silver proof sets? The two sets are not the same, but I don't know if they command different prices.

And the 1979 sba appears to be the clear s. The 1981 appears to be the same as the 1979. I'm suprised the Gold coin is worth so little given that gold is near $900 an ounce.

Those are Numismedia prices for those sets Conder. I had already posted the normal proof set prices, that's why I only put the premier set prices in that post.

Sorry KC, what I meant is I'm not a gold collector so I'm not sure what the values of the Gold Bullion are. I usually go by ebay selling prices for stuff like that.

I would still monitor Ebay's prices for these. The bullion eagles, like the Gold Buffalo's, will have more value than just bullion prices.

Awesome, thank you. Are there any coin consignment sites? For comic books, there is Comiclink, Heritage, etc. They usually fetch better prices than ebay.

Dates matter on some. Here's a link to Numismedia prices. There is a list to your left that will give you an idea of coin prices. Use the collector price list. These aren't always that accurate as the numismedia prices may be different from auction prices due to demand of certain coins. It will give you an idea tho'.

Heritage, Teletrade, Bowers & Merena, Superior Galleries and Scotsman to just name a few.

The 1986 usually sells for about $100 over spot!!
