I don’t know what I was looking for when I ran across this article on Coin Facts about a cancelled obverse die of an 1882 $20 Gold Double Eagle, but I thought I'd take the time to share.

 

Be sure to read the attached letters from Fred Weinberg and Doug Winter. This is old news but always nice to revive every now and then, especially when you happen upon it by accident.

The only thing missing from this is the answer to the question "Was this die actually used to coin double eagles, and if so from which mint?" Or was this just a die that was made up and then scrapped unused after the year ended?
