sp.ms.pf. what .....

i was wondering what the difference was. i see more SP in foriegn but ive also seen usa . ive got a whole bunch of world coin sets and some say specimen set.

I believe SP is used to designate Specimen. There were a couple of special edition Jeffersons and a Kennedy that came out in the 90's that I've seen the TPGs designate as SP. My impression is that it is similar to the SMS that they are putting out now, but a little higher quality - specially prepared (burnished) dies, extra pressure, special care. But the dies are not polished like proofs.

so these would be considered very very nice ms? or are they leaning more towards pr?

also i have specimen notes from like de la rue and american bank note company. what it the diff between the coins and paper in SP?

Those look MS to me.

 

Also, there's a difference between "Proof" and "Proof-like"

 

Many of the panda coins are MS, but are "Proof-like"

 

It's confusing.
