ANACS vs ICG: Whats the deal?

15 posts in this topic

I thought they merged. Are they each still grading under their own banner in the same location? ICG has basically the same rates as PCGS (rather expensive) while ANACS on their still operating web page has the least expensive rates.

There is a huge flood of ICG slabs at Heritage. I was thinking that ICG has eliminated ANACS, but there are still vast quantities of new ANACS slabs appearing at Heritage as well. So what gives? Is ANACS still operating? Replaced by ICG?

I didn't follow the events too closely, but it is my understanding that a former ICG employee tried to buy ICG and the offer was rejected. Then, that same employee successfully bought ANACS, fired almost everyone and moved the operation to Colorado Springs where he then lured most of the ICG graders to come on board.

I believe that both are still in business and have no affiliation with one another.

That's my understanding, too.

The new ANACS didn't want to do the "net grading" that the old ANACS did. ICG agreed to do it and Heritage gave them all their problem coin business.

Due to my last experience with NGC(March to June), I'm going to give ANACS a try.

Jim

You're referring to long turnaround times? If so, be prepared to wait 2+ months for ANACS. :)

I miss the old ANACS ~ not for their grading, but for their great little slab. ICG is dead to me ~ they let a lot of problem coins through and they overgrade most MS67 and up coins.

i just recently sent coins in to be graded by anacs.turn-around time was 12 days! icg is on the top 4 graders .personally, other graders have better turn-arounds then ngc. i think ngc is just to busy.that's why you see other grading companys catching the top graders.(as in ngc)they don't have the staff,or they have to many dealers or just to much to grade.my suggestion,is to find more graders to handle the load.you want to be #1,satisfy the customer.

I'd suggest that you start over since you have text in in your sigline. Be careful not to erase any brackets [ ].

If you want to attach a pic:

How do I add an image to my message?

In order to add an image to your message or your signature, you must have the image already available on a web server and reachable by a URL. This can be an image on your own personal web page, for example. To place an image within a message, simply use the following Markup Tag:

image_name.gif

For example, if you have an image called cateye.gif and its available from your own website at http://www.mywebsite.com/pics, then you would use the following image markup:

cateye.gif

You can do the same for your signature. Click the My Home option found on any page. Then, under the Main Configuration heading, click on "Personal Information, email, password...". Look for the Signature box, and enter your desired information, including any images/markup as above.

Note: To keep the forums loading quickly for everyone, it is recommended that you do not exceed 35k for your image size.

ICG has never appealed to me, and they still don't. I had a bad enough experience with their grading years ago that I've not given them a second thought since. ANACS only appeal to me was the small size of their holders. I think their new holders are awful and their grading is no better than that of NGC or PCGS, so why use them? I know they'll offer "details" grades, but that's something I have little use for anyway. NCS serves that purpose well.

For those who do not remember, (in brief) James Taylor, then of ICG, bought ANACS from Whitman Publishing's parent company and moved them from Austin, Texas to Colorado--a few miles from ICG. Then Taylor raided ICG and "stole" most of their people. ICG then hired any former ANACS people that wanted to move to Colorado Springs.

Under Taylor, ANACS is no longer doing net grading the way they used to. They will body bag more coins nowadays. At the time of the sale, ANACS made a deal with one of those TV shopping network hucksters and has been making special slabs for those coins. Some claim that the moderns are overgraded (a lot of MS/PF70s).

ICG then began to do more net grading, but will still body back environmentally damaged or just plain bad coins. ICG still provides error attribution service with CONECA and now has the former VAM identifier who used to work with ANACS (I heard he's considered one of the best).

ICG has filed a lawsuit against Taylor and ANACS over this.

I liked the old ANACS when it came to VAM attribution and I like their new holders (sorry James). But based on what I heard about the new ANACS from former employees who did make the move, I will not be using them. But I do love those holders!

ICG is still great for errors and tokens. But I agree with James, their moderns are a bit overgraded. And I think ICG has the ugliest slab out there.

Scott :hi:
