EF 40's can be really neat!

27 posts in this topic

My main collection of Bust Halves ranges from XF to MS 64, and once had a F 15 that I sold, but wish I had kept, because in many ways, it was the 'perfect' coin.

A pristine, untouched, mint coin has it's charm...or better said, 'may have' charm, because being pristine and untouched doesn't necessarily disqualify it from being butt ugly.

But when you're collecting OLD, including, in my mind 1940's (which may be modern history, but from my perspective, catching it's own antiquity), used coins cash the most honesty. And as collectors, constantly perfecting our sense of aesthetics, we can create a collection of used coins that may far surpass an entire collection of the same coins in mint state, in terms of eye appeal. And when you find a used coin that is aesthetically pleasing, it's a total bonus over something that's mint state, becaused it's been used in commerce.

Here's a string of XF 40's in my collection, which I believe possess great charm related to their level of wear and good to great eye appeal.

edited to add: If you have an XF that you'd like to post PLEASE do. I think they're great!

EF coins, both EF40 and EF45, seem to live within that small space that can include the best of both worlds in terms of the best characteristics of circulated and mint state or proof coinage. They have been used for more than a fleeting moment in commerce and typically acquire a great patina when left alone, but they also retain significant design details and can show off luster. I have only one image of an EF CBH and will include it here as well as a few other EF halves.

Here are both of my Busties. The first one is more like a VF-35 or so, but it has that look you're talking about. The second one I just bought from 123cents, and can't wait for it to arrive.

VF-XF is the perfect circulated grade for me as long as there is a nice skin and great eye-appeal---kind of like what you've got going on, Mike. (thumbs u

Tom, that 1802 is CRA*P! so's your overdate and the stupid O mint capped bust half. Since when are real busties minted anywhere but in philthadelphia???

...

...

wait! I'll do you a favor.

send them all over to me and I'll take them off your hands!

:takeit: ... all of 'em, all of 'em...

Tom, your 1802 and 1839 O halves are horse-hockey. Now, would you serve your mama on tarnished silver like that?

You should send them to me and not to Mike. Mike would probably keep them "as is" but I would be sure to put ample elbow grease into the chore, that with Nev-R-Dull, and they will look mo' bootiful than when they left the mint!

I'm here for ya, bro!

Man seeing all these early half's makes me want to get into them but I think I need to learn more about them first. I just have one and it's in my 7070.

This is my dansco 7070 cbh. Whadya guys think? 35?

Winston, that 1818 is a nice looker, and I'd call it a 40, but sometimes it's hard for me to tell the diff between 35+ and 40 without actually looking at them. 1818 is not an easy date to find and a lot more scarce than people think.

They are nice Mike. I like to see them in those grades.

Geez, you must be rich if you can afford an F-15. I can't even afford a used A-10 Warthog.
