Post nicest coin purchased for less than $20

Wow... great buys all. Of course the 1853 got my attention ;)

The quarter I posted was graded by PCGS as PR66. It came in a set I purchased with 3 others as I remember. It averaged about $ 7 per set at the time (maybe 2 years ago). The seller didn't say anything about one of the sets being toned.

Here's one of the pics before I broke it apart. The Franklin came back as PR65.

Since the OP likes nickels here was one I got for $2.00( I believe, but might have paid as much as $4.00) Fuzzy Memory now... I was shocked when I seen it...

Talk about SWEET!

That's awesome, I paid $4 for a candy bar in a casino the other day. All I got was some peanuts and chocolate. :P

Bob,

Very nice pick-up on that 1909VDB. I tried for 2 years to get a raw 1909 VDB RD on E-Bay for under $30 for my capital plastics 20th century type set. I gave up! :(

I'll bet a bunch of the Les than $20 coins were bought a long time ago. I'd like to buy a bunch of these I've seen here for under 20. haha!!

There have been some terrific pieces at under $20 listed here, but chinook really knocked the bejeesus out of me with that matte proof Lincoln. Here are a few pieces that cost $15 each; they are graded PCGS MS65, PCGS MS66 and PCGS MS67-

Tom,

That is insane that you got those Washingtons for under $20 each. I would pay $200 a piece for those, they are awesome.

As far as chinooks Lincoln, either his is fibbing or someone needs to call the police on him. :jokealert:

He's not fibbing.....as I recall.....the coin was in an MS labeled 2X2 and he picked it up at a show but I could be wrong... hm

KC is correct about chinook's matte proof Lincoln, if I also recall correctly. Here are three more Washingtons that each cost $15 and each are PCGS MS67-

Shane,

Isn't that the coin that you bought because you recognized that the toning pattern was caused by a certain type of envelope and that you got it cheap because it appeared AT to the untrained eye? Feel free to correct me, I am recalling that coin and the story from memory. Either way, sooooo nice.

Tom,

Are you trying to make me jealous or what? Cause its working

Well, I have to throw in the caveat that these were all purchased raw and in the late 1990s, but at least they were only submitted for certification one time each and that was in late 1998.

Bingo....tiny ebay picture but I saw the lines and it reminded me of a 1960 Toned Frankie that used to belong to a local friend/collector Jim green so I was confident the coin had legit toning....I just didn't know it would be this colorful or this clean. :cloud9:

Shane and Tom are correct. I bought the coin about a 18 months ago from a local show. The dealer had it marked as a business strike in a 2x2. I was even able to get him to knock 75c off the price. PCGS graded the coin PF65BN. Here is a pic of the 2x2.

Indeed. Anytime you can buy a coin for penny on the dollar, you've done well.

I've probably used up all my luck with this one though. ;)

While I think its obvious Chinook won this thread, here are a couple I've got to add. I got these at a coin shop north of Houston last fall, there was a put together mint set in an old cardboard holder - it looked like it had probably been sitting there since the shop opened 30 or 40 years ago. It was $10 for five coins, and all of them were toned. These two were the most spectacular. How much would you guess they were worth? Incidentally, I LOVE my new camera!
