QUESTION:

 

Aside from the date and size, what obvious change was made to the obverse design of Weinman’s half dollar when it was adapted for the American Eagle in 1986?

there are a number of changes. first, the sun is larger on the AE, and its rays extend farther. second, the date is no longer in a recess. and third, although it may not be visible, the flag now has a different star pattern reflecting 50 states.

Weinman's initials were placed at the base of the dress to the left of her trailing foot.

On the Half Dollar coin his initials appears under the tip of the wing feathers, where as on the US bullion $1 Silver eagles the initials are found on the hem of Walking Liberty's gown.

Answer: His monogram AW on the coin’s reverse was replaced with simple initials AW on the hem of Liberty’s gown.
