New results on submission of 54 coins, 1 mint set toner bagged?

17 posts in this topic

I don't know how the heck a coin pulled directly from a mint set can be bagged for improper cleaning but....it did doh! I guess I will be sending that one back in for review as the coin was certainly not cleaned.....other than that I think I did pretty well.

Quite a few MS67's and some nice FBL's....but no stars...I got blown out of the water on some really nice toners :frustrated:

Here is the breakdown...along with how I graded the coins...I actually kept better track on this submission so we won't call these guesses lol

Looks like you came away pretty good inspite of one confusing anomaly.

I agree here. Look pretty good to me! Don't understand the Imp Clng tho'. Not the first I've heard of.

Congrats on the grades. Would love to see some pictures.

I have a thread over on the TCCS boards called Mint Set toner appreciation Thread and images of all of the coins I have certified to date and all the one's to come are posted their. Since these will be for sale in the near future I don't want to spam the boards with the pictures :foryou:

The most likely reason it would have been bagged is for counting wheel damage, and NGc often just lists this as cleaning out of haste. Counting wheel damage and improper cleaning both consist of fine lines being imparted on the coin, and its easier just to say improperly cleaned than to go into detail. If you send it back, its likely to change to counting wheel mark if thats the problem. Look under the toning carefully for a streaking cluster of micro hairlines.

Do coins leave the mint with counting wheel marks? I thought those only happened after the fact but if that's not the case then I learned something new (thumbs u

I'm not sure at what stage the wheel marks are made (whether inside the mint or at a seperate packaging facility, etc), but I have seen many mint sealed coins with counting wheel damage. It's very common through about 1969 or so, from what I've seen in mint sets.

Interesting....when I get the coin in hand I may be able to see something as nothing is visable on the pictures I took but this is a heavily toned coin so it's going to be difficult to see anything.

I am about 90% sure I can get it holdered becuase the other one from the set which has the same toning, just on reverse sides got holdered so hopefully that will be justification enough since either they are both good or both bad....but it can't be one and one as far as I am concerned. (thumbs u

Overall, I think you did a pretty good job, Shane. As for the bodybag, what does it look like under a halogen lamp? Can you see any differences from your usual means of illumination?

I should have it back Monday or Tuesday.....but I am pretty sure there is nothing wrong with the coin so I already contacted NGC about having them take another look at it.
