What is it.....???

Plated, brass cent, wrong planchet???

 

A co-worker gave this to me years ago and I just recently came across it again. I assumed it was of no value but I thought I would post it here to get opinions. Just for the record...I have no scale so I can't weigh the coin to see if it's more or less than a normal cent

 

Opinions please?

looks like environmental damage. Well, not really damage so much, but it looks like it was outside or something.

It's actually gold colored

I have seen some odd looking cents come out of fountains (wishing wells) I think the chlorides/algacides or other addatives to treat the water turns the copper and on post 1982 cents, the zinc actually begins to bubble and desolve under the copper coating.

 

Just a speculation or hunch.

I agree with Woody here. I've seen some cents that have looked like this also. Looks like some sort of dis-coloring.

To me they just look like the normal range of colors and appearances I see in everyday pocket change. I don't see anything that strikes me as unusual.

Weigh it and compare the weight to a normal cent of that era. It could be a bronze cent.

For a 1973 it SHOULD be a bronze/brass cent. Zinc cents didn't start for another 9 years
