An 1834 Small 8 with Large stars and medium letters exists-in both the redbook and PCGS. I figure the Dansco is a misprint and should read Large stars. JMO

There are 7 varieties in 1834. There are only two 1834 varieties with small 8 N-1 ,2. These both have med letters. There are only two varieties with small stars N3, 4. These both have med letters. N-5 has a large 8, large stars and med letters. N-6 and 7 have large 8, large stars, and large letters. N-7 is a proof only variety of which only 7 or 8 examples are known. (All but one are clearly proofs. The one oddball was cherrypicked about ten years ago and is a nice VG. Obviously no proof characteristics remain.)

So a small 8 small stars, and med letters does not exist.

hmm.

the dansco has 5 ports for 1834's..

-1834 (no specifics)

-lg 8, stars, & letters

-*sm 8, stars, md. lett

-lg 8, sm stars, med lett

-sm 8, lg stars, med lett

if that's a misprint, which one should it be?

i wonder why i haven't come across anyone complaining about this screwup

ok i'll try to figure this out.. according to you:

N1 - sm 8, md lett - i assume lg stars - one of these is in the redbook

N2 - sm 8, md lett - i assume lg stars

N3 - sm stars, md lett - i assume lg 8

N4 - sm stars, md lett - i assume lg 8

N5 - lg 8, lg stars, md lett - in redbook (rare)

N6 - lg 8, lg stars, lg lett - in redbook

N7 - same as 6 but proof

what's the difference between 1&2, and 3&4 then?

i'm off to do more research in the meantime.. thanks a bunch

edit.. the redbook lists a lg 8, sm stars, md lett... now i'm extra confused. :pullhair:

helpful info for anyone besides me that cares...

http://www.coinclub.com/wwwboard/messages/29880.html (1824 is a typo)

Small dates

N-1 two points of leaves below the last A in AMERICA

N-2 one leaf point below center of A

Large dates

Small stars star 6 to the left of the point of the Coronet N-3, 4

N-3 berry below center of upright of first T in STATES.

N-4 berry below left edge of left foot of T

Large Stars star 6 to right of point of Coronet N-5, 6, and 7

N-5 small letters in legend, point of leaf below left serif of second S in STATES. R-5 Highly desirable.

N-6 Large letters point of leaf right of center of last S of STATES.

i've broken it down to this, in the dansco:

port 1 - whatever (why is this even there)

2 - N3

3 - ?

4 - N4

5 - N2

for #3 i think i shall choose... N1 - small 8, large stars, and large letters (or whatever 'two points of leaves below the last A in AMERICA' means)
