1878 S Steal or just a pipe dream?

Buying from bad pics must be the new sport around here! :)

Sorry, Harvey. With the quality of those pics, I'm not even going to try.

On second thought, what the heck: I'll say MS 64 with a semi P/L reverse. (shrug)

I think TDN is wrong. The seller didn't steal your money - he merely accepted your gift. My guess is that the coin grades MS63 at best and that $43 was too much to pay for it. The odds of getting a bargain on an uncertified, poorly imaged coin on Ebay are extremely remote, yet buyers love to try to defy those long odds. You might as well play the lotto.

Better to just wait til it's in-hand and be your own judge. Can't tell much with these pics. As Mark stated, the odds are mostly in the sellers favor in these cases. And I do know this by fact because I used to buy these once in a while with the hopes of something good. Never happened!! Good luck harv!!

My first reaction was fake. If its not fake, then it is defintely polished beyond all recognition. If it's not polished, then I am sure there is something else wrong with it and you got taken. Sorry.

This is a "bend over, I think I love you" coin, and unfortunately, you are the one who is bent over.

From the horrid image, it looks like a cleaned AU. While I don't know much about Morgans, you don't need to be an expect on a particular series to be able to spot a problem coin..

I think you odds are better at lotto. At least in state run gambling someone is calculated to win.

This reminds of a line I heard in a W.C. Fields movie once.

A group of rubes were sitting down to a poker game with famed comedian who was also a master at juggling and other hand coordination skills.

One of them asked, “Is this a game of chance?”

“Nooooo!” the master of comedy replied.

As far as strike the coin was hammered. However I also see a lot of hairlines moving in the same direction. Cleaning? Effects of the flash? Die polish? Maybe the experts can tell.

There are denominations that can be picked from bad photos on Ebay. Morgan Dollars in uncirculated grades are not one of them. AU type coins are what I focus on, and usually do quite well. However, there is some risk, and you do get a dog from time to time.
