Is the FG supposed to be recessed or raised? If raised on the coin, then it must be recessed on the die, right? Then, how can it be polished off on the die? That is, how does one polish off a recessed device?

Carl -

MAULEMALL is correct. The variety also exists for several other years as well.

Hey Carl I believe that there is a pretty nice premium for that particular variety.

Carl,

Yes, they worked the die until the detail was gone. NGC doesn't currently recognize the coin, but I expect that'll change. ANACS does. Below is a pic of mine, with a panel dedicated to the die polish. I thought it a fascinating coin. Be careful. You're on a slippery slope. grin.gif

Isn't it in the Cherrypicker's Guide? If so, they will recognize it.

Same as the 3 legged Buffalo. I believe some of the dates without FG are the result of rusted dies being "fixed" and the others are the result of over-polished dies after clashes.

Thanks for the info gang!

Mine is in an ANACS holder and attributed as Breen 5323. There really is a lot of die polishing going on. I think I need a better camera so I can get pictures like Don. (it can't be me, it has to be my camera lol)

I have to try that taking a photo through a loupe (also a magnifying glass) just to see how it works for me! I bought that coin already slabbed. I don't seem to be able to find neat coins raw like you do Don!
