and its a nice addition to the Nickel Set:

and is a nice compliment to this one already in my collection:

Jon,

I didn't run it up - I had a large Max bid -

and you came out of nowhere and out bid me.

What else could I do ? Of course I rebid

hoping to knock out the competition. Regardless

you still got a great looking coin at PCGS published

pricing. Nice material usually goes for more than

the PCGS published price. Sometimes, double. You

were lucky no one had a Snipe bid in on that coin;

I've been beaten out by snipe bids more than I care

to mention.

I was just joking, I know you didn't run it up it is a very nice coin. Your last bid put me to my max bid and I did not want to raise it any higher, so I am glad that no one else sniped the coin.

Right now I am mainly sticking to 1907 barbers because that was my grandfather's birth year. I am starting at looking into getting into different years after seeing all of the nice coins that everyone is posting.

I just sent to NGC a 1907 S dime that I put at AU 50-55 and a 1907 O quarter that I think is MS 63. I will post them up here when I see how they graded.

You can always send me a PM if you want something

and want no interference - its silly to be bidding against

fellow board members.

No, it's not. I like everyone on this board and all, but if I want a certain coin and I have the funds to purchase it, why should I or anyone else bow out to please someone else? You are being exceptionally courteous, but I don't think that this necessarily means that it is silly or outlandish to deviate from this policy. If people on this board and elsewhere would defer to my bids, my collection would be infinitely larger.

My statement is also a double edged sword - I may not

want interference either - and if its something I'm willing

to "go to the mat for" - something I have my heart set on,

then I'd appreciate some consideration - as I would be as

considerate if someone approached me on a coin they

"must have" in their collection.

There are those occasions that two - or more - collectors

are bound and determined to secure a specific coin at all

costs - and that will happen - and then " all bets are off".

Just my thoughts...

1905...

My second set was purchased without a 1905-O Half.

I did locate one in PCGS 40 from Manorcourtman on eBay

a couple of weeks back.

Newp for the better set - the 1911-S PCGS 64 - Non RPM - and a

nice Pedigree as well. My other 11-S in PCGS 66 is an RPM - and

I wanted a normal MM.

Elbesaar, you have a fantastic collection. Question: Do you have any prooflike Barber's? Can you tell me about them, including how rare or difficult to find they are?

PCGS doesn't PL designation on its inserts.

The closest to a PL Half that I own is my 1902-O - PCGS 64

and the best struck 02-O I have ever seen. The amber gold toning

in the images hides the strong PL fields.

1902-OHalfPCGS64CACPL-1.jpg

What I have learned about PL Halves comes directly from the in hand

experiences of my good friend, DrPete, who has specialized in Barber

Halves exclusively for a few decades. The PL's are VERY scarce

- and as a result, highly sought after by serious collectors

[ I love that term..."serious"... read should be "well heeled"...lol ].

I examined the Friend collection prior to auction a year ago and there were

only a couple of PL's in his fantastic set. The most notable was the 1892-O

Micro O in PCGS 68 [ the Finest Known ] ; the 1893-S was a PL ; the 1896-P

- also was a PL; and the 1897-S was a blinding PL coin and could have been called

an SP - IMHO. If I missed any of the others - I'm sorry - but these

were the ones that stuck out in my memory. All of Dale's coins were fantastic

and I was fortunate enough to get three of them into my best set: 1898-S in PCGS 65;

- 1911-P PCGS 65 [ actually purchased a year after the sale ];

and the 1911-S in PCGS 66 [ this coin is the RPM variety -

but not designated as such on the insert. ]

The 1911-S in 66 is going back to PCGS for Designation Review

so I can have the correct variety listed in my set.

The new 1911-S in PCGS 64 is from the Thaine Price

collection which was one of the most famous collections

of its day; as a matter of fact, Dale Friend's set contained

quite a few of Dr. Prices coins as well.

Recently, I was fortunate to have been selected to help

another serious collector disburse of his collection of

Barber halves; I was able to secure 18 coins for my XF set

- and two friends of mine were able to pick up another dozen

and a half coins as well. You can PM me if there are any

dates you're searching for. Once he places the remaining

coins on eBay you'll be subject to the

"pressures of the marketplace".

I'll post the available dates later - keep your eyes peeled.

I left off my Red Stick purchases with 1906...

I'll follow up later with 1907...

I can see that this Thread is well read...

in case you're wondering what those numbers

are at the bottom of my last few Posts...

they are the number of "hits" this Thread has had.

Seems as if alot of folk are looking but not contributing.

You don't have to post a coin if you don't want - but we're

all interested in having a discussion on these great coins.

Wow, that 1909 in 40 has exactly the look I like.

I bought it from Manorcourtman on eBay.

has nice Barbers.

Here's the upgrade:

TCB1915-SHalfXF40.jpg

I mentioned a few upgrades to my second tier set -

and I've only shown a few of them. One of these days -

I'll add the seller's images and again, most, if not all of

these coins will be professionally imaged.

Those images will be placed on this Thread.

Thanks for looking - and I hope you enjoyed the coins.

This Thread has now had 24,767 Hits. Its now averaging

almost 200 hits a day...amazing.

Please feel free to add images - to keep this Thread alive.

I can't continue to keep it going for very long - although I

do have a large photographic project under works.

All my raw Barber Dimes were submitted to

PCGS in a Bulk Submission. I should have those

coins back in a month at the latest.

All my Barber Quarters will be imaged before

the end of the Summer, as will the rest of my

better Halves; the 2nd set of Halves have quite

a few duplicates that need imaging as well.

I guess I can continue to add images - but -

I know there are many many other collectors

out there who are just dying to show off their

great collections but either are unable to image

their coins by themselves [ myself included ] or

are unfamiliar with using a Image Host [ ie:

Photobucket ] like I was. Its now second nature

to me.

Happy hunting everyone !!!

I had to join over here too and say something :D

I'm working on Images, but thanks to Mike I now have, except the 01-S (Which a dealer friend of mine ahs located and is sending in for grading as we speak) the entire set of Barber Halves put together in VF/XF.

I managed to pull ti off in less than a year, right now I would like to upgrade a couple, but basically the set is awfully nice and really excepting one or two coins very well matched. (I don't like my 97-O).

On the main set my 09-S is an F15, but I do have a 20 but it's the inverted mintmark variety.

Otherwise they are all 20-35s, with a few XF40s in there.

I'll get some images up :)

Bill, welcome to the neighborhood!

I'm sure that Mike will enjoy the company. It's good that you live in Jersey. We need someone to balance the scales since South Florida is sinking under the weight of his Barber collections.
