airtites

hi all.

does anyone here use the airtite capsules for their collections? which do you prefer, the direct fit or ring type and why? and how do you label them if using a coin album that usually takes 2x2 mylars, or what do you use for an album?

sorry for all the questions and thanks for your comments.

I use AirTites exclusively to house the raw portion of my half dime collection. I've found the type with the white foam ring to be most appealing to me personally. The coin in the AirTite is placed inside a Kraft 2x2 envelope and then placed into a mylar sheet with 2x2 pockets.

All the pertinent information regarding the coin is recorded on the Kraft envelope. I really enjoy this method of storage very much.

Some folks have mentioned to me how difficult they find it to open the AirTites but I've never had a problem at all. I'll try to post a photo or two from home tonight.

I like the look of silver coins with a white ring around them, gold with the black rings. Though some folks here have said the black rings are bad, and cause toning.. I keep my prez dollars in kointains and some direct-fits.

I'm just getting familiar with all this, but I like the kointain in a 2X2 mylar flip in a mylar page of 2X2s. It might be overkill, but I want things to last...

I use Air-Tites to protect raw large cents. I use the ones with the rings (white) because of the variability in diameter of these coins, but would use direct-fit if it were feasible.

As an aside, I've heard rumors (unsubstantiated) that the black rings cause toning, and I've also heard credible reports of black rings used for many years without incident...Mike

I use ringed AirTites for the silver bullion coin collections (Eagles, Pandas, Britannias, and Maple Leafs). I have a set of unstruck planchets in ringed AirTites and a set of Topps player "coins" in 40mm ringed AirTites. I love AirTite holders!

AirTites are great for creating gifts. For my father's 65th birthday, I bought a Long Island commemorative and Type 1 NYC subway token. Both were put into ringed AirTites and put in a cherry box that fits the AirTites as the gift. It was a great gift!!

After I first heard this, I called the folks at AirTite to talk with them about this rumor. They said that there has never been toning on coins in their holders that did not have environmental damage to begin with. They said there was ONE case where someone stored coins with active but light PVC damage into black-ringed AirTites and the coins toned. The PVC reacted with the air trapped in the ring to tone the coin. Under those conditions, it would have toned regardless of the color ring used. The person would have been better off with a direct fit AirTite.

I have some coins in AirTites with black holders and based on my call with the company, I am leaving it in the holder!

MIke, it wasn't a rumor. I believe I was the first one to mention it more than two years ago. I had 30 Morgans in the AirTites with the black accent rings. I noticed some dark splotches on the rim of a couple, and when I removed them to get a closer look, I saw that the entire edge had turned black. I then removed all of them from the AirTites, and discovered that it was the same for the rest. I sent all of them to NCS for conservation.

I also had about 300 casino chips in these same holders, and I removed all of them, too. There was no discoloration on the chips, but maybe that was because they were composition and not silver. I don't know what may have been the cause, but I'm certainly not going to press my luck in the future.

I love DirectFit AirTites. The only issue I've had is the occasional coin that doesn't want to pop back out of the AirTite. Generally, trying to bend the airtite by pulling back on opposite edges and pushing inward in the center will help those stubborn coins pop out (over a safe landing surface). That's generally only a problem with 5-10% of my coins. Doesn't stop me from using AirTites!

thanks everyone for the informative replies, i really appreciate the feedback.

now i have to ask, do any of you 'treat' the coin before putting it in its plastic house? if so, what with and for what reason? thanks again.

I have some Morgans in airtites and a few other coins. I don't do anything but blow them off with air, and seal them. I don't like the rings myself. I like to be able to see the edges, plus it may be a bit picky, but the ringed airtites take up a little more room due to thier size.

This is the system that I use. I bought the storage case and holders from Littleton Coin Company.

I really like the set up. I used to do this before I started buying graded coins.

When I took out the coins to take pictures, I found my 1932-S Washington Quarter.

I used to go to my grandpas and do work for him. He always paid me but on this particular day I went over and mowed the yard and weeded the garden and then grandpa asked me to clean the gutters, so I did. When I was all finished, I went inside to see grandpa and he took me down the street to get ice cream. While were eating me gave me the quarter, and said that should pay for the work that you did, and I said I don't think so.....I usually got $10 for mowing so I was shocked by the quarter. He told me about coin collecting and ever since I have been hooked on it since!! Since that day every time I go to his house to do work, I get paid in collectiable coins.

Thanks Grandpa

The coins have been in the same airtights for at least 5 years. I don't see anything wrong. I am going to get the 32-S quarter graded by NGC soon with my grandpas name on it.

Could someone post a picture of airtites in an album so I can take a look at what a complete/finished airtite album collections looks like. I am thinking I may want to take my mint state coins out of the mylar flips and 2x2s and put them in a more viewable form. Thanks in advance.
