  1. Okay and thanks @EagleRJO for the explanation. So is the ridge on the right side of the D where I have the arrow mechanical/machine doubling?
  2. So I posted this incorrectly the other day and edited the post and didn’t get any comments so since I’m still curious I’m reposting with what I think the correct variety is... I’m simply trying to figure out if I’m seeing things correctly or just seeing things… This looks like the 002/east variant to me am I wrong? http://www.varietyvista.com/02b LC RPMs Vol 2/1989DRPM002. The d, position and angle looked right to me. Thoughts? Here’s the full list: http://www.varietyvista.com/02b LC RPMs Vol 2/RPMs 1989D.htm
  3. I agree 10 is wrong. Not sure where I got that but 002 or east seems to line up. http://www.varietyvista.com/02b LC RPMs Vol 2/1989DRPM002.htm I definitely cannot see the interior due to the terrible condition but the outside of the d looks, position and angle looked right. Not interested in value just if I’m identifying things correctly. Thoughts? Here’s the full list: http://www.varietyvista.com/02b LC RPMs Vol 2/RPMs 1989D.htm
  4. Still trying to get something right Weight is 2.5g would I be correct calling this an RPM? If it is RPM would you agree it's a type 10 (I found this on http://www.varietyvista.com/02b LC RPMs Vol 2/1989DRPM010.htm)? Are the boxes useful for showing the tilt or are there standards for this type of photo?
  5. Spot on. I pressed on it with a small screw driver and could see the zinc behind the plating. Thanks.
  6. Another super rare 1994 Penny trying to confirm what I'm seeing and what I think I've learned all help is appreciated (crack photos not withstanding) I of course thought this was a re-punched mint mark at first but after looking closer I thought it was mechanical doubling after pictures I went back to RPM because it doesn't look like mechanical doubling I've seen etc. etc. Would anyone be so kind as to school the newb again? Thanks!
  7. See I was wrong again I thought @Mr.Bill347 had a post mint plating blister brockage…maybe some grease in the die? I’ll learn one of these days.
  8. Thanks! One of these days I’ll get something right unless I’m wrong about that…
  9. Hi I have a super rare 2003 penny…I’m joking but I’d appreciate some help determining if I identified this correctly as an obverse die crack or Is there a more specific term? Like a true noob I’m always seeing something that’s not there or just completely wrong about so any expertise is appreciated!
  10. Wow thanks for all the information and responses, totally appreciated . I'm stupidly curious about the stories behind the severe everyday damage.
  11. Hi I’ve just got started looking at coins and I don’t even know where to start with this one. When I first looked at it I assumed it was just beat up but then I thought the L in Liberty looks like it’s on the rim. When I looked closer it looks like the letter “L” is not fully there but merely remnants and the “I” looks more like a blob when examined closely. It seems like more damage would show around these letters if they was simple everyday damage. Really I have two questions, fist, would someone experienced walk through their thought process on evaluating something like this or if it’s just something not worth looking at because of the condition? Second, beyond rarity and value I’m fascinated by the likely causes of these deeper gouges. Seems like a lot of force would be required for some of these and I just can’t come up with reasonable explanations on how coins (not just this coin) get damaged like this in everyday life. Did someone beat it with a hammer? Run over it with some type of steel wheeled vehicle? Washing machine with rocks? I can’t see this happening in someone’s pocket or in normal daily transactions. General wear I get but this seems next level. If there is an area that a more detailed picture would be useful let me know and I’ll get it uploaded Thanks
