  1. I also block out the barcode to do my very small part helping prevent counterfeit slabs which I picked up from you quite a while ago. I know they are all over the place, but it may pop up searching for a specific coin. That and privacy reasons.
  2. Interesting that the reverse label includes a blurb about what the "First Strike" means.
  3. That has to be one of the most detailless yet succinct non-answers I have ever read.
  4. So you can make sets or collections which includes raw coins not graded viewable by the public? How do you share the photos?
  5. NGC and PCGS are the two largest and most reputable grading companies. ANACS is also good for error coins, but not as well known as NGC. I wouldn't submit a coin for grading unless there is a specific reason for having that done, like it is a more valuable coin that is being sold. Since you are newer to the hobby I would recommend checking out this topic on collector resources ...
  6. That marker may only be present in late die states. Of the numerous certified FS-104 examples at the CoinFacts page for that, all of them except one doesn't have the die scratches at the 'N" on the reverse. https://www.pcgs.com/coinfacts/coin/1972-1c-ddo-fs-104-bn/38020
  7. I second that. There are some very insidious counterfeits being passed off as legit collector coins.
  8. I think the bottom line is if you have a lot of raw coins like I do the tpg registry systems aren't a good option for logging those imo.
  9. I believe the question relates to the NGC Registry. The Competitive Registry sets don't allow raw coins as Bill noted. However creating a Custom Registry set will allow raw coins to be entered, but with no points and you can't share the coins last time I checked. It's a much more clunky system also.
  10. Very sad. He had vast amounts of knowledge and was always willing to share that. He will be missed.
  11. If it's not a chop mark, then it might just be a counter-stamped coin. Also, I don't think that's a variety as it doesn't appear to be a feature of the coin die that varied from struck coin to struck coin ... https://www.ngccoin.in/variety-plus/what-is-a-variety/#:~:text=A variety is a coin,to a set of dies. It might be an error coin if you can identify how that occurred during the coin production, but I don't see that being the case with the distinct shape of the mark and nothing that I can think of which may have caused that during the coin production like a struck through error. The thing that's sticking in my side is that NGC certified the coin, unless it was just missed which isn't very likely. Maybe some others could chime in here with some opinions on the mark and what I am seeing.
  12. I would still request a refund and then pay again when it can be sent. I have no idea about Etsy purchases, so I would dispute the charges through your card company until they send the coin.
  13. It just happened to me by chance. This isn't a computer tech forum.
  14. It looks like you are missing a few there. There are five BU grades following PCG$ convention including: BU (MS60 to MS62); Choice BU (MS63); Select BU (MS64); Gem BU (MS65); and Superb BU (MS66 to MS67). However, for adjectival grading I prefer to just follow the NGC convention with three uncirculated grades including BU (MS60 to MS62), Choice BU (MS63 to MS64) and Gem BU (MS65 to MS70). Beyond that you can just use the Sheldon scale.
  15. I like the clamshell style boxes since you can just flip them open or closed. Too bad the mint went on the cheap and decided to start sending out coins in cheap dollar store like boxes.
  16. Why not just restore the drive or wipe it with a factory reset instead of trashing the whole computer.
  17. I'm not familiar with that coin, but is it possible some of these coins were counter struck like chop marks on trade dollars which NGC will still certify, and not consider a damaged or modified coin.
  18. @ShinyObjectsI like the matching coins, although the ones I was looking into were different as the silver ones were still legal tender. I did order one since it was so cheap (under $2) as part of a dealer order so there would be no shipping cost. I will have to see if I like it in-hand and keep my eyes open for matching rounds which is pretty cool for $1 to $2.
  19. I would request that they send the coin purchased now or issue a refund. eBay has policies about receiving an item within a reasonable amount of time, and that's not reasonable. You can also get help from the card company used for the purchase. If you still really want the coin you can always offer to pay for it when they are ready to send it, after you get the refund.
  20. From the original post a coin marked BU or brilliant uncirculated would need to have no indications of rub marks or wear, particularly at the high points of the coin which includes mostly around the top of the head on the obverse as well as the eagles head and feathers on the reverse. There doesn't appear to be any obvious wear on the reverse, but here may be some wear on the obverse of the hair next to the cotton blossoms and around the cap fold. Even without any obvious wear there does appear to be rub marks around the eye and on the eagles breast, indicated by darker or discolored areas. This alone would knock the grade down from BU to AU even without the potential wear indicated. There may also be signs of a cleaning, but I think that would be very difficult to establish just with those pics. The pictures, particularly the obverse, are a little blurry and don't always tell a complete story. You may want to take the coin in-hand and compare it to pictures of a low MS or Mid AU grade for that particular coin at the following webpage ... https://www.pcgs.com/coinfacts/coin/1878-s-1/images/7082
