  1. What grade do you think this would receive? It has excellent lustre, especially the reverse which has a full cartwheel and is stunning. My opinion after studying it is MS63 or MS64 but interested in your views. It only cost me £30 so I'm thinking of sending it in. Thanks in advance.
  2. I got a 69 for the Orangutang! and a 68 for the Hippo. I sent 10 off in total and received 2 in 67, 6 in 68 and 2 in 69. Very, very happy.
  3. Thanks very much. I suppose with the weak strike it is easy to see it as wear. The problem with photos is you can't always capture the lustre. If it didn't shine so much then I would have thought it low AU or EF too. Looking forward to receiving it back.
  4. Well there we go. MS64. I am so so delighted with this. For months I've been checking photos, and comparing to similar coins that have been graded. I kept coming to the same conclusion, that this was a weak strike and not AU like the majority of people were saying. Especially after seeing the NGC professional photos. I know we often overgrade our own submissions but in this instance I really thought it was MS63, so to see it has been graded MS64 is really great. In the center of the obverse, on regular and strong strikes there are horizontal lines, and on mine there are none. If the higher points were worn, then why would this 'inset' central design be worn? It just did not make sense. Combined with the fact that the lustre was blazing and completely unbroken. I was worried NGC might just think it was circulation wear and not a weak strike, but they haven't and I think this is completely accurate. Hooray for NGC.
  5. Still waiting on the grade but got the photos from NGC just now. They look great! Please click the links to see them full size.https://ibb.co/9ntmYQKhttps://ibb.co/SPsmgTWhttps://ibb.co/Y066yTk
  6. Picked this up lately at an auction in a job lot of some really fantastic coins. I've posted on coincommunity and I believe it could be an underweight 2 Reales from 1538 to 1541 Mexico, Carlos and Juana. oMo oPo. What do we think? Any comments are welcome, I've found some very similar but I don't think the exact same type with the scrolls on the outside of the pillars. Also, strongly considering sending this in for conservation as NGC might be able to the gunk over the bottom half of the shield (if it isn't damage.)The weight is 5.62 grams exactly, and the diameter is 25mm.
  7. Just acquired this. I have been trying to capture the reflectivity of the fields but it is quite hard to do so. The obverse is very reflective, you can see quite a way down a red pencil that I use to test reflectivity. I'm sure it is MS but I don't really know where it lands. What do we think?
  8. I understand, but I don't think that scenario applies to these coins that were minted in the UK by The Royal Mint. Also, the asking and selling prices do seem to reflect the quantities stated on various sources, such as NGC and numista. Norman Sillman was the reverse designer for this coin, who is associated with designing £1 coins for The Royal Mint. https://www.ngccoin.com/price-guide/world/sudan-5-pounds-km-71-1396-1976-cuid-1091263-duid-1529537
  9. I believe it was The Royal Mint in association with the WWF, they are commonly referred to as conservation series. I believe there were 24 countries issuing two coins each, so 48 to collect in total from the seventies (1974-76) I think, although there is little information on the internet. I have started a mission to collect them all Raw and grade them myself at least PF67 A little challenge and a great investment for the future, as some such as the Sudan issued only 5000 I believe of the $5. I'll post them here when NGC slab the ones I have so far
  10. I've got 5 or 6 from the series to send in to NGC. Here are some, do you think they will make PF 68?
  11. Just wondering what people's opinions of the grade is? Abrasians to the neck and cheek and some to the springbok's hindquarters. I've compared it to some sold on Heritage, seems to be about ballpark MS63 ? Chance at 64?
  12. Just wondering what people's opinions of the grade is? Tiny abrasians to the neck and cheek but the reverse is fantastic.
  13. What grade do you think this makes? It didn't cost me much so I am thinking of sending it in. The reverse is very lustrous, kind of hard to show in the photos but it is very bright when tilted in light. It is maybe AU58, but usually AU coins are dull in my experience, and even though the veins in the reverse leaves are worn, I'm unsure if it is wear or a weak strike. The weight is 4.96 grams, it came from a reputable auction and I'm pretty confident its genuine.
  14. Closer image of the rim hit. Not as bad as it looks in the original photos but yeah that alone might make it details.
  15. Really nice in hand, a friend in France picked it up for me, I'm thinking AU and maybe it has been cleaned. What do we all think on the grade? Would it get a details? Worth slabbing?
  16. I did yes, £11 I think it was, and standard grading. Package was signed for yesterday. The toning is super pretty, I'm looking forward to the imaging.
  17. Is that the turnaround at the moment? I did a submission last year and it took about 50 days. We'll see, hopefully won't be as long as you say.
  18. Thanks everyone. I have been comparing and comparing to existing coins from AU58 going to MS65. The one thing the photos cannot pick up well is the coin's ability to reflect light. When tilted, it really gives off a shine that only an MS coin would. When I look at various Au58s, they appear dull with the surface lustre not apparent. On this, like others have noticed some of the high points appear worn, and I'm unsure if this is due to a weak strike or improper storage. I have sent the coin to NGC now and very much look forward to seeing the result.
  19. Thanks very much for the replies. I'll send it in and pay for imaging also. I'll be happy if it makes AU58 but due to its reflectivity I think it may be MS and be a weaker strike than others, but we shall see. I'll update here in about 45 days then RWB: interesting stuff! Didn't know that about the coal burning making the toning.
  20. Thank you so much, I have uploaded some better photos to show the lustre.
  21. What do you think of the grade? The toning is gorgeous. The lustre is very good, when tilted in light it is very reflective. Thinking of sending it in.
  22. Hi, I checked all of these on wildwinds and it seems that the exact design is only on the gold coins that weigh about 8 grams or more. All the others are outside-affiliatelinksnotallowed That's what has me confused. I believe that's why the other person on cc mentioned that it may be a later imitation in the style of those specific gold coins? Or if not, maybe it is a Macedonian like you say. https://www.wildwinds.com/coins/greece/macedonia/kings/alexander_III/t.html
  23. Thanks for the reply. You don't think they would know what it is? I mean they are NGC...surely they wouldn't say oh sorry we cannot ascertain what coin this is and send it back to me? I have found one of the most reliable ways for me to test if a coin is silver is to slide a small magnet from the top of a coin held at a 45 degree angle. If it moves with a bit of friction it usually passes for silver. The magnet moved at the same speed as it does for my morgans, bullion, etc etc. I'm pretty confident that the coin is silver as that is what coins of this period were mostly made from.
