Hello! Received this grade and nearly collapsed because a Jubilee head in this grade can command over £10,000. I strongly believe this is a technical error on NGC's part but can we confirm this just to make sure? A jubilee head sits ontop of her head whereas I believe this is a veiled head. Hi Coinbuf, I have submitted it. I collect slabbed coins for many reasons. In hand I think it looks a little nicer than the photos suggest, which usually happens with me. I'm hopeful for AU55 or even AU58. I bought the coin because it looked like a lovely example of a half dollar and I liked its colour. Its scheduled for grading currently. I'll update when its done. From experience, I don't think NGC will designate this details but you never know. Hopefully not.

Interesting! Seems there were two types for the year. I've checked Heritage sales also that show the dot and the denticle types. Not sure why the two varieties existed, maybe a mistake in the die or they decided to change it half way through or something. Hopefully someone can enlighten. Coin weighs 5.2g exactly so its bang on for the weight and makes sense as I see no wear.

Thanks for all the replies. I was quite pleased with it when it arrived but after studying it for a bit it does seem to have altered surface on the obverse, whether by some sort of dip or other method. Tilting it about in the light it does appear to have different patches of colour, especially around the legends and around 1pm there is some sort of rub mark. I'm not going to waste a grading fee if it probably will details. Unfortunate cos I like the coin. Also about strike, absolutely. A year or two ago I posted a 25 kopeks that everyone thought was AU, but I knew that because the fields were so reflective that it must have been a weak strike that was making the devices look worn. Sometimes coins really really look worn but it is either a weak strike or that aforementioned weak or late die state.

Just wondering how you see this. Lustre is very bright on the obverse, a big cartwheel effect. The reverse looks very nice but a bit less lustre, perhaps due to the lack of fields. Seems high grade, just wondering what your collective thoughts are?

NGC graded this one MS64. I thought it would get PL but I'm just glad it straight graded. I also made a big purchase on this MS67. Currently no.1 on the registry set now so pretty pleased with that, and trying to find more.

Hi, Just wondering about this fantastic 2 Thaler. What do you make of the line on the obverse? Is it likely that perhaps it has laid under an envelope or something for a long period of time? I'm wondering if the coin would details or not, and also if there is any point in doing conservation in an attempt to rid the line and the 'toning' around it. Near the top of the line it looks to be grey/green verdigris of some sort? I'm thinking that the grade is somewhere around AU55, possibly a bit lower or a bit higher, having compared it to known examples. Thanks in advance for any replies.

Thanks for the replies. I too can't find any that were proofs or were listed as proof, but I did find this sale that NGC determined to be PL. Although it is a different obverse design. I'm going to try collecting this 1852 to 1868 registry set of 4 reales. The scratch to the obverse I'm pretty sure is not large or deep enough to warrant a details grade, I'll send it in and see. I agree with somewhere around MS62 or MS63 with a PL designation hopefully. Also, I'm wearing gloves as I don't like to put fingerprints on my coins, even holding them at the very edge can cause the smallest fingerprints as your fingers overlap. (albeit in the video I had my left hand exposed as I was operating the camera, oh well.) Yes it makes me look like Michael Jackson! Picked up this 1858 4 Reales and I am really amazed by the reflectivity of the fields, it would surely get a PL designation, but could it be an actual Proof? What do you think the grade could be if I sent this in? Thanks in advance Please view video to see the reflectivity: Video of Coin

I'm thinking of sending this in, but the silver is very toned. Would it be worth asking NGC for conservation? Or can nothing be done to make the coin brighter? What grade do you think it would get?

Hi, What do people make of the grade? and would NGC give it details? I have no idea if it has been cleaned at all, it doesn't strike me as cleaned but there is discoloration to the reverse and what could have caused this? The fields are lustrous, the reverse fields are clear and very reflective, I can see my face in it. Full lustre to the reverse it seems. In hand it seems MS, but interested in opinions, thanks in advance.

So it's been a while (6 months) since I found my first 25 kopeks in mint state, my colourful 1859. I just received this having paid £185 ($223). It is in a much higher grade than I thought, but I'd like your opinion on the grade again. Here are some photos I have taken just now. The obverse is stunning, the reverse is also reflective but does have some light scratches that you can see if you zoom in on the photo. The rim damage you can see at 11 o clock is extremely light. The fields are reflective and I can see my face when looking at the reverse fields. I'm happy with it and I think it will grade well.

Thanks for the replies. Yeah I'd be happy at 63 but annoyed at 62. I'll send it in, I love the reverse. Yeah some European coins have very attractive designs indeed, I basically collect world coins but there are some very attractive USA classic coins, the Morgan Dollar is tough to beat. I love the crisp strike and lustre of the 1881 S.
