  1. So there were no sets made so SMS is a misnomer
  2. Did the Mint market them? If so why did it take over 30 years to notice them?
  3. Okay now we have two respected Numismatists disagreeing over evidence 4. 1964 SMS coins Here @MarkFeld says The 1964 SMS coins became known more than twenty years ago. I saw a fair number of them prior to 1998, while still a grader at NGC. And @RWB says and at least two, #4 and #6, are actually disproven by the evidence. So were there Special Mint Sets in 1964?
  4. I have never been able to make sense of the concept of registry sets. I mean competitively collecting? Who cares? I guess tons of people care.
  5. Look at a craft store such as Michael's, Joanne's, or Hobby Lobby for a 'daylight bulb' if unable to find one try a high intensity light bulb. OR since you are likely more computer savvy than I you could look online for one.
  6. Opinion...NO reason is that what looks to be a second D does not show the characteristics of double die, it is possible that is a re-punched mint mark but I have doubts. My guess is this is a post 1982 Lincoln cent and the apparent doubling is a phenomenon of plating issues. This is very much the same as the quizzes that @Insider did on another forum. I like what you did.
  7. To some people the original government packaging means nearly as much as the coin. If you are just trying to sell this keep all the paperwork, boxes, mailing packages, etc. If the holders are after market, such as a set of WWII nickles in a cardboard holder with a short write up or pictures and inside a plastic holder, or a set of Lincoln Memorial cents in a holder made to hang on the wall then value is minimal.
  8. yes better pic. It does not look like good news though. I think the D is not doubled or re punched, it looks to me to be plating issues.
  9. In the last few years there have been numerous spectacular 'finds' and 'errors' showing up on the market that no one had seen before. Am I the only on that is standing here dumbfounded? Some of what I am talking about; 1. 1794 "first struck' silver dollar 2. dime struck on a nail 3. quarter struck over Canadian quarter 4. 1964 SMS coins 5. 'Prototype' IKEs The list goes on. I have to admit that I am a devotee of the Apostle Thomas, I doubt everything. As such I think every one of these 'Spectacular Finds' is at best overhyped and at worst totally make believe. The closest thing I have to a motto is I believe nothing, know little, and think a lot. I think #1 is an over hyped early strike but no way to say it is the first and #2 through #5 are so much fertilizer, am I the only one?
  10. too much money chasing colonials for too long causing prices to be too high for easy collecting for folks in my price range.
  11. I think you have the dreaded machine doubling on this one. The mist mark is hard to tell as I am not getting a clear pic, and looks like shadowing around the mint mark.
  12. Sorry, Ratzie, no proof coins have been minted in denver. you have a verywell struck business strike,
  13. why oh why does the congress not change the obverse? There is more than enough evidence that whatever is put on the coin will be accepted by the public. I realise that whatever is done will be a computer generated low relief second rate design but at least it will be something different.
  14. the W is A W the designer's initials in a monogram no mint mark means Philadelphia Below the E? a mark of one sort or another no big deal I think
  15. I am not sure what you are seeing on this one
  16. I see some strike doubling that adds no value to your coin. Classic double die of the periphery of the coin is no longer possible as the hub is pressed into the die once now.
  17. Ideas... 1. Insider, start posting your quizzes. 2. CAC threads get a lot of traction on some boards 3. RWB could post more threads like his thread about the 1794 dollar 4. stupid contests? other boards have lots of them for some reason
  18. luck had little to do with it. How many hours a day for how many days and how many years did he work to find them? How many tons of earth did he move? Nuggets like that are not just tripped over. He earned them, every bloody penny of them, mate.
  19. is it stone or metallic? To me it looks metallic and the patina almost looks, well, questionable. You may want to contact a museum or two to try to contact an Egyptian curator or expert. They may be able to identify it easily.
  20. it is a TI the T2 has almost ball like serifs
  21. The great Karnac the Mudnificent holds the envelope to his Onyx orb and behold out of the envelope falls two shiny coins! A new discovery!' he shouts. Sometimes I wonder if in a generation or so we will be looking at claims like this the same way we now view some of Walter Breen's claims. Why do I hear "Entry of the Gladiator"?
  22. The only thing I have seen 'Acid Wash" used for is a Muriatic (likely misspelled) acid wash of a brick or stone building. I have not seen it done in a very long time, though. Not sure it is still legal.
  23. spend it or bring it to the bank for exchange. Worth 5 cents. Maybe Lucy will give you some advise at her little stand for it
  24. Hmmmmm...wonder why there would be a 1918 pattern half when walking half was two years old. You sure it is United States of America and not United States of Mexico or somewhere else?
  25. or you could just spend it as it looks to be a damaged cent
