    Cleaning of coins

    is always a no no!
    Cleaning is usually considered doing something that changes the surface of the coin. Like rubbing the coin with polish or some type of cleaner like baking soda, etc. By rubbing the coins surface you will impart light hairlines to the piece. These are easy to see under magnification by turning the coin under a strong incandescent light bulb.
    If you want to remove tarnish from silver coins it is better to use a coin dip like Jewel Luster, etc. Although you need to be careful with dipping as you can still ruin a otherwise great piece.
    The proof sets and mint sets from the U.S. Mint are not air tight. The coins can and do tarnish, tone, get spots, and many times get a dull film on their surfaces. It all depends on how they are stored.

    NGC's new holders.

    I like them!
    I guess I am going to get flamed here but I don't understand the reactions to NGC's new holder? I haven't tried it yet but I think that taking photos of coins will be much easier with the new holder. The area around the coin is opened up more light will get to the coin. Also small coins wont look like they are hiding out.IMO.

    I had a package that was stuck at the Jackson, MS P.O. for 14 days.
     
    Dinger just go away! Pick up your ball and go home.Maybe Dinger should join the PCGS collectors group! Then he could leave us alone! He absolutely doesn't have a foggy clue and I doubt that he will ever have a clue!The Post Office can do some funny things. I ordered a coin from a dealer in Virginia. The package arrived in Jackson(less than 100 miles from home)in less than 3 days. Usually it takes only one day for a package to get from there to my house in one day. The tracking showed the package in Jackson for 14 days. The clerks told me that it was in a truck that hadn't been unloaded. I find it hard to believe that it took them two weeks to unload a truck?     Where did "buy the coin not the holder" go?
    First Strikes or Early Releases. I know I am as dumb as a house plant. But if the two coins were side by side with the slab labels covered up could anyone be able to tell the difference between the two coins? Doesn't the SAE that makes it to NGC on the 31st day look just like the SAE that arrives on the 29th? I fail to see the reason in this except for NGC who is making tons of money on this insanity! That is just my opinion.
    I purchsed this coin for my registry set and there wasn't an "Early" or "First" on the holder's label anywhere???

    Still working on my Buffalo album!?!
    I had planned to just save up to purchase the higher priced 1918/7-D and the 1937-D 3 Leg Buffalos. I pulled a couple of slabs (1915-S & 1937-D)out of the bank with plans to sell both of them on eBay. After looking at my '15-S in the slab and comparing it to the one I had in my album. I decided that the one in the album wasn't as nice so I got out my little hammer and gave that slab a couple of whacks and my 1915-S was free!

    Just Two more!

    My #2 Buffalo Nickel Set!
    I am down to the 1937-D 3 leg and the 1918/7-D! I can't seem to quit buying for my registry set to finish my "Library of Coins" album. I decided to use the 50 year old sulfur laden paper "LOB" album for my set. The reason is the toning the album gives the coins over time. I just checked the album today and noticed several of the Buffalo's were taking on a pleasing blue and amber colors.

    "What You Need to Know - About Coin Collecting"
    When you click on to the NGC Chat Boards the first forum is "What You Need to Know - About Coin Collecting". There is a wealth of information there! I would suggest to anyone having trouble with any area of coin collecting to check out the posts there.
    It would look to me that anyone who is getting body bag after body bag would welcome any help he could get? It costs a ton to get coins graded. Why waste your money if you don't have to?
    I buy raw coins all of the time and I do get a BB every now and then. But I CAN tell if a coin has been messed with most of the time! The reason I can is because I have read and studied the information I have picked up off of the chat boards as well as from books I have purchased! I have gone to many coin shows and compared coins to see what real "lustre" looks like.
    There is no reason to get angry because 99% of the collectors on the Journal and chat boards are just trying to help you...

    Maybe this isn't the place for coin submission BB's maybe this is?
    Numismatic Tangents on the Chat Boards would be a better place to bash eBay sellers. One of the things the Journal is for is sharing your experiences. Surely being burned is an experience we have all had in trying to assemble our collections. I have been burned on the last two coin purchases from sellers on eBay myself. Although, I didn't have to wait until I sent the coin to NGC to find out that I had been had!
    If you can't tell if a coin has been cleaned or not. Do not buy raw coins off of eBay!!! Buying NGC, PCGS, or ANACS, slabbed coins will save you money in the long run.

    The 1934 - 1938-D Buffalo Nickel Short Set
    Paul is correct all NGC does is look at your coins!.
    A neat set to collect that wont break the bank is the 1934 to 1938-D Buffalo nickel short set. You can find most of the coins in MS66 or better and it is certainly a "Classic Coin". You also don't have to worry about the millions of Moderns that are sitting out there that will inflate the numbers of MS69 & MS70's and drop the value over time. The Buffalo nickels were struck for circulation. Most of the moderns came directly from the mint straight into slabs! I am not trying to knock moderns but just showing that there are some of the older Classic coin sets that can be just as much fun to put together and have a lesser chance to drop in value.

    You being anger at NGC shouldn't taken out on Silver Dollar!
    It sounds to me that you think that NGC should call you on every submission you send in! I doubt that NGC would have the time to call everyone that sends in a couple of coins! Maybe you think your better than everyone else or maybe just us gramps'ssss!

    Can anyone truly tell the difference between a MS69 and a MS70? If MS70 is perfect then why is the PCGS MS70's worth more sometimes 100's of dollars more than NGC's MS70's?
    I can remember collecting coins long before the numerical grades. I can also remember when a MS65 was the top grade! Well here comes the Registry and the super grades. It seems funny to me that a raw modern maybe worth a couple of bucks. Then you get it put into plastic and all of a sudden you have a thousand dollar coin! It just makes no sense. Most of the modern stuff that is being shoved into the Registry sets comes directly from the mint into a TPG holder. Never mind the other 500,000 of the same coin being purchased from the mint and not sent in for grading yet. Fellows, these coins will never circulate! How many other MS70's are just sitting out there waiting to be sent in for grading? People aren't collecting coins anymore they are collecting plastic slabs with a little piece of paper stating some way out there grade. I don't even see a reason to have a modern coin in the slab at all!
    Coin collecting should be fun! I am working on several sets that will never be in any registry. I am busting open the slabs and putting the coins into albums. Yes, I buy slabbed coins and bust them open and place the coins into my albums. I am not even using the new state of the art albums either. I am using 50+ year old "Library of Coins" albums. The paper in the albums contains sulfur! The coins in my Buffalo Nickel album are all turning a light amber color. Some of the coins are taking on other colors as well! The only competition for me is trying to find decent looking circulated coins that haven't been messed with. Ten years from now which set is going to be worth more? Your MS70 slabs or my carefully assembled albums?
    I do have a registry set of Buffalo Nickels, though (Monty's Bison's). You will find coins in that set grading from VF20 to ms67. I never will have the top set but that's fine with me! I try to buy coins that please me no matter the numerical grade. Also I do have a couple of MS63 and MS64 coins that I have no interest in upgrading whatsoever.
    Here is one of my newest purchases a 1918 ANACS MS63 Buffalo! Heck I can't even put the coin in my Registry set! This should prove that you don't really need to have a coin with a top grade!

    Has anyone ever heard about So-Called Dollars?
    The Jamestown Tercentennial Exposition 1907 Norfolk County, VA.
    The U.S. Mint struck the Official Medals in the Mint Exhibit on the grounds of the Exposition. The obverse of the medals was a female Indian bust of Pocahantas. The reverse had sailing ships in the center.
    There were 4 diferent types struck for the event:
    SCD #344 Silver
    SCD #345 Silver-Plated Bronze
    SCD #346 Bronze
    SCD #347 Gilt
    All are listed as scarce.

    Nearly 50 year old albums finally has coins in them.
    A couple of years ago I purchased an old Buffalo Nickel and Standing Liberty Quarter "Library of Coins" albums. The albums were made in the late 50's and 60's and were never used. It has been fun filling up the holes with VF to Unc. coins. I have received a lot of pleasure smashing PCGS, NGC, and ANACS, slabs to add the coins to the albums!!!

    There is a way to send your coins in for grading and not have to pay the full grading fee for coins that wont grade!
    Any time I have a coin that I am unsure if it will grade or come back in a BB I send it to NCS. If the coin is cleaned or damaged you can have NCS to return the coin to you and just charge the minimum NCS fee for looking at your coins. If you want it slabed anyway then NCS will slab the problem coin and list the problem on the holder. This will at least prove the piece to be genuine or not.

    You don't have to just buy slabed coins to keep from buying cleaned coins.
    Just learn what a cleaned coin looks like. There are books on the subject of grading. If you have bought some cleaned pieces compare them to coins that are slabed. On BU coins learn what lustre looks like.
    Also buy yourself a couple of "GOOD" loups! I don't mean the cheap chinese stuff either. Get you a Carl Zeiss 6X by 9X loupe. If you can't afford the Zeiss get a Belomo 7X and or a 10X. Also Bausch & Lomb has a good group of loups. I would suggest the B&L Hastings or even the B&L coddington.

    ICG not yet number 1 grader! Then when 5years, 10 years from now?
    Anyone that thinks ICG is the "cat's meow" needs to try to sell some! If I could sell ICG slabed coins I would be more interested in them. NGC and PCGS are here to stay. It would take a major re-thinking of thousands of collectors and dealers for this to change and it aint gonna change. It has been that way from the beginning and I don't any end to it!

    Then how on earth did I buy a 1937-D MS67 Buffalo for only $125.00 on eBay?
    As Bill's blog goes ICG has a number of "Expert" graders!?! They all may be jam up and jelly tight for all I know! One thing I do know is, it is hard to sell a ICG coin. I can sell coins raw easier than ICG graded stuff.
    As for the '37-D Buffalo nickel I purchased for $125.00 off of eBay(I was the only bidder)I plan to try to re-sell it if I can. That is unless the coin looks to be a true MS67 then it will be flying to PCGS or NGC as fast as I can bust it out of the ICG holder!!!

    1914-S again!

    My suspicions were right afterall!
    I received an e-mail from my friend who lives on the left coast! S.F. dealer sent 100 pre screen Franklin's. Only 9 made grade! My dealer friend has "gone to the beach"! That was his term for sending everything to PCGS. He told me that the last time NGC did this(tightened up) he stayed away for 6 months.
    Just got back 3 of my NGC registry coins today from NGC. One was sent for the Variety plus. I wanted the FS# put on the holder. This involved a crossover grading as the coins were PCGS. This coin crossed as it should have as it was as solid a MS65 as one gets. The other two PCGS Buff's were sent for an up-grade. Well they didn't get it. One crossed at the same grade and one didn't cross at all. The coin was stained! NGC has gone to calling nice toning stains!!!! The funny thing is I have another Buff that is the twin of this one and it is in a NGC MS65 holder! I have heard of tightening up but they have gone to the silly side, in my opinion! I guess I am headed to the beach as well.

    Sending the coin in for a re-grade let greed get the better of me!
    I purchased, what to me the, is the nicest looking Buffalo Nickel I have ever seen! Even sending it to NGC didn't worry me at all. I just knew the coin was a "no question" MS66 or MS67 *STAR*! Well the NGC graders didn't think so as I got back my 1914-S in a MS65 labeled holder. Instead of being happy about my new $2,000.00 beauty I was shocked. How on earth could they blow it so bad! The NGC graders must be blind in one eye and well you know! So back it goes for a re-grade. To make a long story short it will be coming back to me in a NGC MS65 labeled slab! I think I just need to be happy with what I have!

    From Q.C. to the dumpster!
    I thought I would have a long wait in the Q.C.que? Well in one day I am at the F/I/S/! The coins were hit hard by NGC this time. I had one PCGS Buffalo that wouldn't even cross!?? Two did cross at the same grade though! I thought (still do) that two of the coins were a shoe-in for an upgrade! NGC sure has tightened up their grading of Buffalo Nickels lately! I am going to try to adjust my brain to their new standard! I wish NGC would anounce when they have tightened up on grading. It would sure save me money.
    I knew that they had tightened up the Morgan Silver Dollar grading, maybe NGC has tightened up all across the board?
