It's always nice to find someone to agree with posts like this, so I get the point of it.  Regarding your penny, I assume nicks you don't see overshadow the cheek bone rubs that are there?

The TPGs are blinded to the individual's submitting coins and I think we sometimes lose sight of the the of amount of low grade trash they pay to get graded in the cash for the few gems.

I pulled it out and looked at it closely, it doesn't look like rub on the cheek, just toning that shows more due to lighting angles. If it is album rub from long ago, it isn't as much as is on this PCGS MS66RB. And it sure doesn't have a huge scratch on the reverse like this one.

  2. What does the reverse look like, could that have prevented it?

I sent in some stuff to the other guys and at least 3/20 were under. The biggest issue IMO is the inconsistency. If they are tightening the standards back to what they were 20 yrs ago which seems to be the case, then some coins from 5 yrs ago are valued at multiples of a better coin because the better coin was graded in 2019 or 1999. Buy the coin, not the holder, right? Isn't the holder supposed to be so that those who aren't good at grading can rely on the experts?

This is a $12,000 coin based on TPG

This is my $200 coin based on the same TPG. It is not nearly as dark as the photos, almost pure red. There are clash marks and die cracks but where are the nicks or hits? 1919-d-obresized.thumb.jpg.97895fefc25e12b62f8aeb15e54528f1.jpg1919-d-reresized.thumb.jpg.098243bd6415edbc9ca837a9a35585c3.jpg

Reported and the seller has been contacted.

Bob, could you please PM me? I can get counterfeits removed but there are procedures that I have to follow. I won't be able to post here if it interferes with procedure. I can explain more in PM.

    Thank You,   Ed

Do you have a seller's name to add to the list?

I wasn't going to because I am not sure they are knowingly selling counterfeits. Since that one sold before it could be removed I will disclose their seller ID.

    It is    racata_0

  5. I think the best grade the half dollar could possibly get is MS65, that would make it worth $30 but I don't think you could find a buyer at that price.

The cent looks like it has toning, something may have gotten on it or it could be from the end of a roll.

I'm not very good at Morgans and it is hard to tell from the photo but I think I see raised dots below the S in STATES above the F of OF and below the D of DOLLAR.

  6. I am sorry for your loss.

As far as the coins go, joining this forum is a big step. There are many experienced people here willing to share their knowledge, that is the key to this sport/  If you aren't sure about a coin, It's grade or potential variety, just ask. Don't forget good pictures!

There are many more valuable varieties then there were 20+ years ago when many of these collections were assembled. Learn about doubled dies, re-punched mint marks. Get a general idea how to grade.

I would start with the proof and mint sets. They are easy to check for errors, take up a lot of space, are pretty standard in pricing and can be done as a lot. It would let you try different ways of marketing your stuff.

I would consider trying The Coin Marketplace here on this forum, there are no fees.

  7. NGC is having a special that ends tomorrow. This would be a good idea if you are planning on getting any graded. Save almost 50% on associate membership.

  8. My first question would be, what do you intend on doing with them? If you are going to sell them, where? If Ebay, I don't find it worthwhile to TPG anything with a value under 200$

Are you going to keep them? If so, I would only TPG the very highest value ones.

I would look around for a local coin shop that is a authorized NGC/PCGS dealer. They should have advice and opinions.  My LCS went over my top 30 coins, gave me advice on which to submit and sent them in for me at very little extra cost.

Chances are that you can sell them away from ebay easily by offering 10% less than they would go for on Ebay.

How familiar are you with grading or coins in general?

I would be sure to not touch any with bare hands, post some pictures as Mark said and see what others think.

  9. Since i posted that name 19 hours ago, that seller had 4 items removed by ebay and will have another 9 removed tomorrow morning, 4 of which are reposts of the 4 from yesterday.

From now on, I will post the seller name as a title and a link to their items as the body. Posting pictures is too cumbersome as I have to download them and resize. Kinks to the items won't last 24 hrs as they get removed.

Often I just go for the items that are easy for me to prove counterfeit. I'm sure there are other counterfeits and other people that can prove them as such with grater ease that I can.

  10. Should I just keep editing a single post of counterfeit ebay sellers or make a new comment for each? I have a ton of them but won't put a seller that has one fake occasionally or has questionable items. Only  the ones that are attempting to defraud with provable counterfeits.

    Ebay sellers of counterfeits:

I know we all know not to buy a $5 Morgan from China, but I thought you may enjoy this seller's inventory pic.
