I respect the fact that you have 56 years of experience.  I look up to ones like that. Being a newbie is being like a rookie. I had to put up with a lot in the first year in the fire department as rookie. So I can take  all this better then most. But I'm getting the understanding that error aren't so popular. That's fine,  but understand it's popular in alot of people minds that get first started. You might be telling the truth but, when you post in here like this, saying it's in possible on certain things of the hobby. Will that's kind of like a parent telling there kid they aren't going to amount to nothing. The world everything changes. Never no what would happen in the future. I can pull up a NGC weekly report ad, and it states how they strongly want to encourage the new generation and young folks to get in here and jump in with the rest of us. With that being said it does not matter how you start a hobby everybody's different how they do there thing. We don't need to beware of anything like your were saying in your first post. If anybody needs to beware its you . Because this is what runs people off and you don't here from them again. And we wonder why we have problems in this new time of age. Wow unbelievable. Hmmmmmm

I'm surprised someone came up with this topic. I don't know if if this is a knock down or a different learning point for  newbies. When I came into this hobby about a year ago, i had know attentions of trying to striking it rich really quick. And sure ain't looking for a shortcut. I have learned alot wile being on here and pushed really hard being percentent of posting interesting coins. The idea of starting out is to try finding something that will interest collectors in my opinion. I can't speak for the rest but I'm different on what I do for myself. Ive been told plenty of times I need to start a hobby. Well now you have me lol. People are looking for that easy richness. Iv been poor all my life, and blessed with what I have and what I have accomplish in my life. With  me it's not the money it's  more to having certain coins that are valuable or not ,to show and interest other people out there that you might find that would be some what fascinated to the hobby. That's why I do it this way because its the cheapest why . And probably for others. It makes me think if I find that one valuable coin maybe I would sell it and get into bigger  and better coins out there. With that means that would have to be seen. I would love to have a spot to show my errors I think that would be awesome. Personally my little dream is going to a big coin convention, and or coin show. If it does happen, I'm for sure bringing back a souvenir, like coins. Hahahaha.

Hey Kiddo! Glad to have you here. Please don't pay attention to the above rudeness, that is not at allwhat is normal here. These guys here are a wealth of great information and advice. I am very happy, as I'm sure they are too, that you were not impressed by the YouTube videos because they are very misleading and get everyone's hopes all up for no good reason. If you are able to read the Redbook you are one up on me. I have a collection with no idea of its value except what I find in the Apps like CoinFacts and PhotoGrade. If you are on FaceBook you are welcome to join the 2 groups I find helpful, American Coin Club (discussion only) and The Money Vault US Currency Coins and Error Collectors. These are young person friendly groups and we have several experts that will answer your questions. Just tell them I sent you. BUT, this Newbie Forum right here is the best resource I have found and has the nicest bunch of guys I've encountered, so you're in a great place here. The FB groups are just for extra value as needed. Happy Hunting to you and I hope you stick with it.

I am 12 years old and I got into coins last year. I inherited my grandpa’s collection and I started watching tons of YouTube videos such as “300,000$ 1964 Nickel!” but then I got a book, the Red Book, and it has such good information. I now try to get as many good coin books as I can and buy quality, non-error coins.

There were  many counterfeits of these made. In fact Disney produced them for it's Pirates of the Caribbean souvenir shop.
Did you test it with a magnet to see if it is silver? That would at least eliminate some of the counterfeits.

Well, in his defense he did bring me a whole bag of change that was left inside an auction car. He warned me not to touch it without 2 pair of gloves on. So I said I'd just hold off until I got my cleaner.

Since there's all this chatter about "conservation" - one thing I've tried recently with dirty coins (literally.. dug them out of the yard) was distilled water in an ultrasonic cleaner.  I use a small zip lock, fill it about half way with distilled water then float it in the main bath.  Seems to get the debris off of it and I can't picture a way in which it would harm a coin... but I've been wrong before.. more than one... today...

Yeah, I had marked it out on another one and forgot about it here. But I say come one, come all, as I am armed to the teeth. Lol! And also have a very protective and loyal K-9 whose world wouldn't turn without me.

No. Different context. In this case it just means our big dollar coins, finishing with the Ike.

Yeah, after that I started paying more attention to his posts about them and started to understand. Remember, when he compared the 2 I thought he was raising them like livestock and not as pets. And I love all my dogs and put Cap on the highest pedestal of all. Lol! He is my Baaaaby.

Also, the doubling that you see on the reverse is not from a doubled die. It is mechanical doubling.

Lenny has an interesting relationship with his Crays, it sounds like.  Crays are fragile when they molt, but that's about the only time I'd say that's true.  Other than that, they're pretty hardy lil buggers and they absolutely will kill and eat pretty much anything that they can catch and subdue.  I think Lenny is doing what many cat owners do.....overlooking the fact that his beloved pets are essentially vicious predators who have the equipment and the instincts to serve them well in their ecological role.  I've had scorpions, and they're much more calm and subdued than any crays I've known in my life.  But, don't get me wrong....I LOVE crays!  I just see them for what they are.....aquatic generalist predators and scavengers.
