  1. I saw this coin in a thread last month and even though it wasn't for sale at the time I managed to add it to my collection. I had decided not to buy it but during the course of the day that it sat on my desk I must have picked it up 20x to examine it. I just couldn't resist. This is one of those rare instances where a coin speaks to you, it doesn't matter what lighting you use the coin is beautiful and takes on different personalities as you rotate it under any kind of light.

     

    I do find it ironic that the coin album that graced this coin with it's magnificent color also imparted the grade limiting "slide" marks on the cheek. I have owned two proof 68 Morgans and IMO without the disturbance on the cheek this coin could grade that high!

  2. This J1554 was Barbers proposed design for the new dollar coin in 1878. The obverse is a slightly modified version of his Half Union obverse from the previous year. Of course Morgans design was the eventual winner but the playing field was not very level when you consider that mint director Linderman personally imported Morgan from England in 1876.
