VKurtB got a reaction from Abuelo's Collection in Coin Worlds Most Influential People in Numismatics Survey
One can always quibble about people on and off such lists, but Newman seems a particularly glaring omission. I have no particular problem with any of those on the list being there.

Hittin’ the sauce again, are we? As for the coin, it’s NOT a missing clad layer.

I just did a count and I have had personal one-on-one conversations with 72 of those people listed, all of them live and in person.

Rick Tomaska should be on the list, if only for his book on the Cameo Proofs of 1950-1970. It belongs on the shelf right next to Roger’s on the 1936-42 proofs. Ricky T “sold out” and did the TV thing. That doesn’t destroy the legacy of his book.

Familiar with the claims. Bologna. Completely false and unsubstantiated. Start with the basics: ALL development and experimental work was done at the Philadelphia Mint. Mintmarks were never applied to experimental pieces - they were only used for production dies once Philadelphia's die shop had certified master dies and hubs. Evidently, the folks at the unmentioned company do not know any of that. The list of failures could go on and on....
Ratzie33, you're simply picking up nonsense from the internet and gluing it to whatever is handy. Your Ike dollar does not even rise to the level of lunch meat. I realize that sounds harsh, but you've been presenting nothing but fakes and damaged coins for several months. When will you begin to learn from members here and elsewhere who are much more experienced than you?

an AU 58 is not a MS 60 with a slight bit of wear. It is closer to an MS 68 that got slid across the counter once. A 60 that is showing wear would be a 50 or 53 at best. A 58 should always look better than a 60.

VKurtB got a reaction from Insider in Lighting techniques for coin photography - updated
"Tilting" is important for examining a coin, critical even, but the needs of examination and photography are different, until and unless we get a standard moving picture format, something several people are working on. As long as we are getting a look at the entire coin in a photo, tilting is a fool's errand.

One thing I do know that was "overfunded" is the money.org website. Somebody saw them coming on that one. Yes, it has some nice features, but someone's laughing all the way to the bank. And a lot of the core membership doesn't even like it as well as its predecessor site. Coolest thing: complete searchable (even for the ads, I believe) digital The Numismatist. Dumbest thing: the member blogs. It's like the worst of CoinTalk on steroids.

Unless my wife picks one up in a fit of pique, they're often not "aimed" at all, at least in our place. In all seriousness, if anyone might be "visually oriented", try to pick up a copy of the old video, "Secrets of the U.S. Mint". There's a bunch of basic "process of making coins" stuff in there.

MS60 is the maximum "ugly" you can get without being an AU.

I can't blame you here. HOWEVER, and this is a biggie, even the way people react to this pandemic is HIGHLY predictable once one knows another person's "politics". Politics is getting to be (It wasn't always like this, I swear.) the way people think about everything, whether they realize it regularly or not. My current theory is that our choices of media outlets leads ALL of us down a particular primrose path. Some people are aware of it, others aren't. We've become two "tribes", and I don't see it ever changing again.

No one will EVER get me to pay more for a bagged to death MS61 than an attractive AU58, of ANY series.I literally believe the 58 should bring a higher price. Maybe if I cared about Registry points, but I don't.

VKurtB got a reaction from GoldFinger1969 in What's Happening at the ANA?
Because of their charter and the IRS code, the ANA is extremely limited as to lobbying. If that confuses you, keep in mind that the ANA is far older than the IRS is. Their initial mission got partially squashed/

I mean this with all seriousness. In the approximately 25 years that I've been an active member, I can't remember even one Board member or staffer say the Young Numismatists was overfunded, not one. Is it? I dunno, how much is right? I do know this - EVERYBODY in the ANA "management" is YN-obsessed. "I believe that children are our future, teach them well and let them lead the way..." Okay, enough Whitney Houston.

You posted and you got answers and advice, you then argue with those who took time out of their day to reply and continue to insist that there is something there that is not or at least is not visible in the photos. When you ask questions you must be willing to accept the answer with the understanding that we do not have the coin in your hand and only have the imperfect photos to make a decision from. You do not have to agree with the opinions of those that reply but arguing with those replies is highly unproductive for you and the forum at large. If you are still convinced that you have something then you have choices, you can do nothing or you can send the coin in to verified.
As to this forum stay if you can accept that not everyone will agree with you or leave if you cannot, your call.

Yes, this. And this is ALSO what the TPGS's cannot tolerate and are trying to find a way to "fix" it that the hobby will support.

VKurtB got a reaction from olympicsos in A common U.S. business opinion about Double Eagles
I'm convinced that all this talk about just plain folks holding gold coins is more the stuff of romanticized legend than reality. Heck, even Bust Half Dollars are available in nicer conditions today because they were primarily used for bank-to-bank transactions. Why would not the same apply to gold coins? Remember, a huge number of U.S. gold coins out there today had lengthy "European vacations". They aren't even mostly coins hidden from the 1933 melting pot.
Exceptions: the three major gold rushes with mintmarks - C, D, and S, and the western frontier generally. Again, cowboy movie fodder.

You are looking for what is known in the hobby as "discovery coins", the first find of a new variety. These are extraordinarily rare events, not the sort of thing that crops up every week. And I'm talking across the whole hobby, not just one individual. These are really "unicorns".

I too get a bit annoyed seeing how many guys get snookered into buying high digital magnification USB scopes. A better choice is a “real” microscope of the type used for circuit boards or dissections. Stereo viewing plus a camera tube. Yes, it costs more than a USB cheapie. But even a Chevy costs more than a used Yugo.
