I used to play with vials of mercury when I was a kid, and I came out okay, okay, okay, okay...

Yup, sure can. I am guessing that's why human handling has been virtually eliminated.

Of course, the fact that Joseph Wharton owned the largest then-known nickel mine, in far eastern Lancaster County, PA, near the town now known as Gap, PLUS the only plant capable of creating “malleable nickel”, in Camden, NJ, was merely a coincidence. Uh huh.

You must be a lot of fun at parties. Most of the coins in my collection came from Halloween handouts, the soda shop, street finds, or trades. Remember when people used to stick baseball cards in their bike spokes? Coin collecting feels a lot like horse racing—newcomers try to learn the ropes, only to encounter seasoned experts with sharp criticisms. Fast forward to 2024, and people are puzzled over why horse racing is losing popularity. It's like high school all over again. My bad for posting.

Yes, except where I am, at literally the highest point in Alabama. We don't GET floods, we send them.

There were no tours on Juneteenth, a Wednesday. Our ANA tour was the following day, Thursday. Federal employees all. Guess how much activity was apparent on the Thursday after a Wednesday holiday. I imagine the July 5 tours will see even less activity. Not a single press, nor conveyor of blanks, nor upsetting machine, was moving. But there was ONE ROOM where activity was abuzz. The robots that pack SPECIALLY STRUCK Denver circulation-style coins for 2024 Uncirculated Sets and the humans inspecting the finished holders were chugging away, doing their duties. The new information I got was that Uncirculated Sets are now containing specially struck coins struck at a far lower speed and higher striking pressure than "intended for circulation" counterparts are. Who knew and didn't tell?

Wait until you attempt to sell and you find nobody is offering over melt for your PF70 and MS70 coins.

Unfortunately, either with or without these minor varieties, this material is pretty much NNV - no numismatic value. Tens of thousands of people are into this type of material. They all want to sell. Nobody wants to buy. It's a classic case of, "everybody who wants them already has them."

Take it from a former Pennsylvanian who became an Alabaman four years ago - Alabama is pretty much a numismatic wasteland. Experts? Not s'much. The guy that might have been the best dealer in Alabama died a couple of years ago.

I see no doubling, only abrasion. I am kind of a quasi-expert on abrasion and toning. They are key aspects of my personality. I'm abrasive and people don't care for my tone. (Now ask me if I care - I'm a Philadelphia Eagles fan.)

The bottom line is that however the OP describes the coins he mentioned, none of them have significant numismatic value either in dollars or in visible characteristics.

This above, from @dcarr, is an absolute truth. On the railroad, Carson City is ON THE PATH between the Comstock Lode and San Francisco. AFTER Carson City, you STILL need to pass through Truckee, the Donner Pass, Sacramento, and then on to San Fran.

I have already had three live conversations about this thread here at Summer Seminar. Four people. All four dismiss RWB's opinion about shipping differences between Carson City and San Francisco, and these are among the top experts in the field, who spent serious bucks to be here.

Correct. The movement of gold from San Fran to Denver ROUGHLY coincided with the movement from Philly to Fort Knox. Both were pre-war planning for a possible invasion on the coasts. The amazing part is that Denver is pretty close to West Point in quantity, with Fort Knox WELL in the lead. Don't try to convince The Gentleman from the Great Commonwealth of Kentucky, Senator Paul, that it's still there, though.

The proximate cause of ALL of the confusion is the sloppy way NGC throws around the term "membership". It is VERY EASY to never see the free option ever again once one has become a paid coin submitting member. It gets WELL hidden.

The TWO best diagnostics for small date 1970-S cents have NOTHING TO DO WITH THE SIZE OF THE DATE. Yes, we are THAT "bat feces crazy" as a hobby. The best is a very weakly struck "LIBERTY". The second best is noting to where the upper swirl of the 9 points at its terminus. If it points toward the "southeast", it's a Large Date. If it points roughly east, it's a Small Date.  ALL Small Date 1970-S cents have "high and tight" mintmarks.
