  1. Tell us more about the coin, rather than have us do research.

Complete slab photos, both sides, "in-hand" inspection of the "stain," anything else you can think of.  How long have you owned the coin?  Did you just get it back from NGC recently, or years ago?

When taking photos to "bump up" PF contrast, has that made the stain much more noticeable than your in-hand viewing.  On my computer screen this coin has a diameter of 5 inches, thereby making the stain 1.5 inches long.  What is the coin's actual diameter?

I don't think it's a stain.  I'm thinking more along the lines of some sort of heat aberration.  Can you see the stain in the NGC Verification photos?

When you look at it in-hand, does the stain jump out at you?  If yes, then there is almost no way you would not have noticed it when received before grading.

You should ask NGC if they have ever seen anything like this discoloration.

The discovery was deemed so significant that the editors of the Red Book devoted an entire section to the find in an edition circa 1990 or so due to the recovery of California coins and ingots produced by known and heretofore unknown assayers. It was a blemish on an otherwise incredible find made possible with an underwater submersible outfitted with bright lights and mechanical arms and fingers which worked the site some 7,000 feet below the surface in open ocean.

Reminds me of this epic scene.

At a depth of 7,000 feet, the sea pressure is around one and one half tons per square inch.

  3. This thread has gone off the rails.  EagleRJO's post changes everything.

The mystery is now counterfeit holder, counterfeit coin, or counterfeit holder & counterfeit coin.

PasterKen, you have to detail more precisely what you're saying in this thread, and what exactly you did with the NGC Coin Registry, and what exactly resulted.

Double question marks says it all.

  4. Back on August 19, 2019, NGC's Price Guide lowered the "value" of my 1839 $2.5 by 14.5%, and there it remained for three and three quarter years.

After tapping the holder to rotate the coin this past February, I needed to take new pics of the coin to reflect the way it now looks. (iPhone SE)

I played around with the lighting, and the resultant photos just happened to bring out the popular color of the year:  blue teal, i.e. the My Pillow Guy's teal blue shirt.  lol

This morning when I looked at the NGC coin values for my Registry collection, the coin — and only this coin — had risen overnight by 2% in price.

I attribute this price increase to be a function of the coin's stunning NGC Registry holder-appearance, as can be found when perusing the NGC Coin Explorer for this coin, where its photos reside in the pole-position first place spot.  The coin now has a proof-like Registry appeal, and exudes Art Deco and Art Nouveau aspects that make it one of my favorite coins to view.

Appealing coin photos translate into increased value.

Not to belabor the matter any further than necessary and acknowledging the high regard and esteem you have for all members, I should like to point out that the historical figure you cited was pardoned, much like Alfred Dreyfuss decades earlier and the literary world knew nothing of him until he published his book.  As to the other figure you've alluded to, he was neither a praetor nor a Consul and was formally addressed as Tribune, or at least he was in the 1959 epic Ben-Hur starring Charlton Heston.

My thanks to the Moderators for their patience and indulgence.

Back on Track now (minus the political commentary). Man I love this place!   🤣

... and here I've thought all along that he was the guy who got William 'Golden' Holden to volunteer to return to Sessue Hayakawa's bridge, after his miraculous prior escape.

Even Papillon would have to have been impressed, no?

After 57 years in the hobby, I'm lost on what to do next. I just retired from a really cool job I have had for 40 years. It was a fun ride. Never thought much about what I would do when I reached this point in life. It may be time for me to stop buying and start selling. Can't really find a different direction to go.

I retired 7 years ago — let go, to be more accurate — and I had already collected my entire US gold collection years before.

Once the income stream was gone, survival mode kicked in:  get things in order.  Mostly what I did was assess where things stood on all fronts, and I started to enjoy each day without the former daily grind.  As my Schwab Financial Consultant put it, "You've already won the lottery, don't screw it up."
I had various daily chores required of me to maintain my lifestyle, had several old hobbies that I could revisit, maybe tweak eventually upon re-inspection, and had interests on the world around me to keep me entertained.

So I did nothing "bold" the first year off.

Recommendation:  Peruse all of your available posts here on NGC (do a search using your User Name; all posts) and get a sense of how the vibrancy of your younger years has waned compared to today.  Doing this will refresh your memory of the good old days, and give you perspective of "then" versus "now," so that you can make better informed decisions later on down the line.

  7. Well, on the only thread I've found from BillJones — The Wells Fargo Hoard — I came across Condor101 who is 13 Veteran.

In looking through that thread to see when was the last time BillJones replied, I came across the most number of 14 Grand Master level Boards Title:

    James_OldeTowne
    RWB
physics-fan3.14 (who has a dual title Grand Master and WYNK Black Belt)
gmarguli (also a dual title:  Grand Master and Slightly Evil)
MarkFeld (dual title:  Grand Master and Dealer)
WoodenJefferson (dual title:  Grand Master and I have nothing to add or subtract, I am merely here.

  8. I'd be of more help here if I was on my new computer, but right now I'm on my 2011 MacBook Pro (use it in the kitchen), which struggles with the following not working keys: 6 + h y n /.

    Even the spacebar doesn't work.

I like the "puzzle" aspect of what might be the "level qualification."

My guess is a multiplicand of years x posts, with bracketed thresholds.

I'll prepare the spreadsheet later today.
