I agree with what you say - it IS a cool find, and left unchecked I feel like it will continue to grow/cause more damage. Looking closely at the coin, there is indeed a "booger" on the surface (as is common with these early proof sets) that has started a chain reaction with the surface of the coin. Left as is, I'm sure it will at the very least dig down deeper into the surface of the coin, and possibly to a wider extent outward. Yes, I agree with this as well - it will always look like "something" was there in that spot. Ain't that the truth, haha...and I've had mixed results with NCS. Sometimes helpful, sometimes not so much. I don't always hold them responsible for "fixing" all the problems...but in cases like this, where basically I could achieve similar results without paying an exorbitant fee and the coin will still always look like there's a big black spot on it...I just feel like it's most likely not worth the effort to send it in and pay someone to do what I can do here for free. I suppose I was more specifically asking if anyone had had a coin similar to this that had gotten decent results from NCS conservation. I think we are all in agreement here that no amount of proper conservation will completely make the coin look like it never had a big black spot. So that's consistent, which is helpful. I suppose the next main question (which you began to answer) is this - what is a PFDetails FS-101 worth? And replies like someone over at CoinTalk - "it's worth what someone will pay you for it" - don't really do anything to help answer the question. I suppose a more specific question would then be "does anyone collect Lincoln Cent Die Varieties, and have they seen enough examples of completed sales to accurately estimate what this coin is worth so I can ask a reasonable price for it?" I tried registering at the LincolnCentForum to post the question over there, but my registration request has yet to be approved.

Just discovered I had this coin today (after owning the set for a few months) - 1971 S Proof Lincoln Cent DDO FS-101 - and I'm wondering if anyone has experience with NCS conserving/removing a spot similar to what's currently occupying the back of Lincoln's head? Yes, they will all need to be the same type. For example, I send them whatever hoard of Jefferson Nickels I've assembled (my next batch will be about 100-200 coins.) Or one time I sent them 50 1958 Proof Sets (so, 50 of each denomination) and they did that. They'll quote you a price for the lower grades and specify charging a buck or two more for the higher grades (which, honestly, yeah, I'd gladly pay the extra $2 if the coin reaches a 70) and you can specify a minimum acceptable grade like MS64FS. Nothing below that grade will be graded or a fee charged for it. This is, at least, how it worked last time I did it.

I agree - they can get super pricey (if you're at the upper levels of quality.) However, very often you can buy this level of coin raw for a fraction of what a more popular series would bring. I also love that Jeffersons seem way easier to image than other coin sizes haha

Jefferson Nickels are a really fun series to collect. It's the ONE US coin series I actually make any sort of attempt to complete a set (although I'm really only after super high-quality pieces that were purchased raw, so I don't have a complete set by any means yet.) When people used to ask me "what series should I start collecting if I'm thinking about collecting US coins" I always replied either Jefferson Nickels or Eisenhower Dollars. You can put together almost a full set of Jeffersons by searching bank boxes (if you want circulated) and the keys you can't find can be purchased for less than $5 at a coin shop. Or, you can put together a nice UNC set of Jeffersons relatively easily and relatively inexpensively...or you can shoot for really high grade specimens...and then you can go for FS and toners and varieties. So many levels.

One other thought on the toning of OP's coin - As I look through my examples, it's interesting to see that some of them are still blast white, some of them have a light caramel color, some of them have started getting darker into a more maroon or even purple, and some of them are going blue. ALWAYS the reverse, though.

Yeah, I'd agree with the others on this - for now it's safe and sound inside the OGP. Maybe someday in the future you'll have a grading credit or need a tenth coin or something for your minimum invoice quota and it can slide in there. And sending in one coin for grading like that (to fill out a submission) is not too much of a sin - at least you're not the person sending in MS64 state quarters (I've seen sooooo many of those it's just like...why? WHY?)

Well, I'd say it would depend on your coin. If you can look at it with a loupe and don't see ANYTHING wrong with it, maybe it would be worth it. The coins I have that are 68's...yeah, I can see why. Same with the 69's - there's always like one little spot, struck through grease area, etc. Which is fine - if the coin doesn't deserve the grade, it shouldn't get the grade.

Haha it literally happens every time I say anything about them. Which I don't mind, they're just trying to add one to their collection too. But I have my hoard I'm building, so I try to at least politely preface any mention of them with that disclaimer. I buy these sets EVERY time I see them at a LCS. I always sell the $2 or $1 bill (depending on year) and the silver commemorative, unless it has attractive toning. I think I've kept one or two of each year. Mostly I just want the nickels.

I've yet to receive a 70 for any of them (6 69's and 2 68's, although one of those 68's was bought raw off eBay about a decade or so ago for so cheap it was worth the shot.) I don't think any of them received a FS designation, even though they are ALL FS (with the exception of one 69 that has one of those lint/wire strikethrough errors on the steps.) All my 1997's are FS as well, zero FS designations. I wonder if they started adding the FS designation recently. I've also wondered how many of my 69's would garner 70's if I resubmitted them with the ones I've picked up since my last bulk submission. It's getting about that time again, I think, since I have 21 of the 1994's and 8 more 1997's (plus a few tubes of worthy business strikes.) I just hate to spend that kind of money on grading fees with a potential financial crisis around the corner. (Obligatory "thank you, but no I'm not wanting to sell any of these matte proof Jeffs" addendum, since someone always asks.)

I have a small hoard of these, as well as the 1997 P, and the only time I get them graded is when I save up enough coins to work out a bulk deal with NGC. The toning is pretty similar to a few of my coins (that lovely caramel brown, usually on the reverse) - but I have had a couple really nice toned commemorative dollars (EDIT: I meant to say "from these sets" - that I'd had a couple dollars with attractive toning.) Sent both to NGC straight from the packaging - one NGC liked, one they called AT.

Hey everyone, me again. I finally did it...I went and listed my older/better world coin hoard, as well as a BUNCH of my better US stuff. LOTS of silver, key dates, stuff as old as the 1700's. It was really difficult to not go full Gollum/Smeagol on that treasure pile, but it's time to significantly pare down my collection, so here it all goes. 500 lots, US and World coins - even a $50 star note from the 70's. A bunch of silver/silver proof Ike Dollars, key and semi-key Standing Liberty Quarters, type coins (like an 1877 CC Seated Dime), and a few HUNDRED older/better world silver and copper coins. Everything starts at $1. There is NO reserve price - so what it ends up at, it will sell for. I even got the auctioneer who lets me use his account to make auctions to halve his normal buyer's premium to a very, very reasonable 10% total.
