    My Grades Are In!

    My raw old coins purchased this year all were slabbed!
     
    Not a single bodybag! So I sent in: 1856-P Quarter Eagle, earned an AU50.1856-P Seated Liberty HAlf Dollar, earned exactly what I expected, XF401899-O Barber Quarter dollar, did in fact grade AU55 as predicted by Dean Heard. I thought 58 but no, 55!Overall only the 1899-O quarter was a disappointment. Not bad for 110 to 153 year old coins!The 1899-O quarter and 1856 Qtr Eagle raw again!

    I was taking pictures of coins to sell on eBay.....
    in order to buy old gold coins. So instead, I had to buy a replacement for what I broke. I went for the same model camera, this one is a refurbished model for $79 and free shipping.
    It's only a small $$$ hit, but now I have to wait for the camera to arrive to list any more coins.

    Look at the image and you'll see what I mean!
    Notice how the "O" is partly obscured on the 1856 O by the tailfeathers of the arrows in the eagles claw?
    And also the reverse is true for the 1852 O quarter eagle. The "O" on this coin obscurses the aroows tail feathers.
    I guess there isn't much room there for the mint mark on the quarter eagle.

    The Best Laid Plans!

    Well, I just bought my most expensive coin, from a branch mint but not a half eagle.
    Turns out I have been watching a 1856-O Quarter Eagle PCGS AU53, a real nice coin! Only 21,100 minted.
    My eBay sales funded the purchase today. So I Made A Best Offer and we came to agreement pretty quickly. It is my biggest point coin now at 2335. And resides in my 1856 Mint Set.
    I have a buyer for all 9 of my Proof 1/4 oz American Gold Eagles, so once we do the sale, my 1856-C Half Eagle will be procured. That should happen this week!
    Quite fun times here, selling modern gold to buy old gold.
    I will be looking to sell my Circulation Strike $10 Gold Eagles next. I have 22 differnt ones of them. Hopefully, my buyer will want these too!

    I purchased a 1883-S Half Eagle MS62
    I know 1883-S is tough for Morgan silver dollars but I recently found that is also true for 1883-S Half Eagles. Only 83,200 were minted.
    I did a BIN for 1883-S MS62 for what is about 2.5 times the price of "common" date half eagles. And I believe the 1883-S is now my highest single point coin. It gets 1865 points.
    I recently lamented that I was going to have to wait on Charlotte and Dahlonga half eagles, but I decided to sell some of what I have and redirect the dollars toward that end. So, I have been selling gold and platinum eagles, SBA's, pretty much any modern coin I have is potentially on the block. My Sacagawea's will go in the next round, as well as, any of my other duplicate gold/plat eagles. I'm thinking of selling my MS70 Silver Eagles too.
    I have been selling on eBay, with excellent results, I might add. Still in the black for most so far after eBay and PayPal fees. My eBay name is 78terp.
    I have my eye on 1856-C half eagle and 1856-O quarter eagle (high $$ for me) high point both in excess of 2000 each.
    While typing this I just sold a 1/4 oz Platinum Eagle via BIN.

    1894-O Half Eagle
    The 1894-O Half Eagle with a low mintage of 16,600 has arrived! It is nicer than the photo in the ad, IMO, and may have upgrade potential. It is graded AU55 and resides in a PCGS old green holder.

    First, an 1893-O Half Eagle
    Now, an 1894-O Half Eagle
    There goes my savings for a Charlotte or Dahlonega Half Eagle!In a recent journal I mentioned my intent to save up and go for my most expensive Half Eagle yet. But a funny thing happened along that path and that came in the form of 2 different years of New Orleans minted Half Eagles both AU55. The 1894-O had a pretty low mintage of 16,600. Yep, came across the 1893-O (image below) and won it for a song (IMO). Now an 1894-O was up for auction or BIN, so click went the BIN button. With rebates and eBay Bucks certificate, the final out of pocket cost for the 1894-O shipped was about $425. Also a good deal for me.Now it will be longer before I get those Charlotte and Dahlonega Half Eagles. I still hope it is this year but it may push off till next.

    I won a 1893-O Half Eagle for the auction's reasonable opening price!
    Boy, was I surprised that I won a PCGS AU55 1893-O Half Eagle for $379 on eBay. I was the only bidder. 110,000 were minted. It is my second New Orleans minted Half Eagle.
    I think it was a great buy.
    BTW- I went to the ANA Coin Show in Coloradio Springs yesterday. Did not find any of the coins I needed so I didn't buy anything. I did take a few graded gold eagles 1/10 oz and got offers of $100 for each of them. I didn't sell. I think I could do better on eBay. I really was expecting to use them as trade on something I may have wanted anyway. I sensed little interest in them as they were bullion and modern.

    I am slipping further down the list even though ........
    I've added 18 coins to my sets this year! My point total is 180,106, 220th place and falling!
    2 2009 ASE's- one MS70 and the other MS69.
    1 Capped Bust Half dollar
    1 Seated Half dollar
    1 Half Dime
    2 Barber quarters
    11 vintage gold coins- 1-$1G, 2-$2.50 Liberty's, 7-$5 Liberty's
    and 1-$10 Liberty.
    I think the 1884 Half Eagle that got 575 points was the lowest single coin point total coin of the bunch.
    Now things have slowed in the purchase area as the next coins I buy will be the most pricey coins yet in my collection. And will each have a single total point count higher than any coin I already have. Charlotte and Dahlonega Half Eagles!!!!!! Also I have some others already in mind too.

    More gold!
    Did a BIN with this one. 1877-S PCGS XF40 Liberty Half Eagle. There were 26,700 minted. I got nearly $75 in rebates on it (eBay Bucks, MSN Cashback Instant Rebate and Big Crumbs) which made it an excellent buy.

    Had my own milestones!
    Rode to Longmont Colorado for a local coin show at the Boulder County Fairgrounds yesterday. It was pretty busy and a bunch of tables.
    There was not very much gold available and most of what was for sale was modern. There was only one slabbed Half Eagle, an 1856-C. PCGS Genuine slab.
    So, I didn't buy anything.
    That's a milestone of sorts.
    But my real milestone was that on this trip to Longmont, my 1991 K75S motorcycle crossed the 100,000 mile mark! I bought it new in 1991.

    The 1899-S came in but I had to send it back.
    It was a nice coin except at about 10 oclock on the Obverse, there was some sort of "damage". It's hard to describe and I already have it on its way back to the seller, So no images. The damage didn't appear to affect the reverse but it cost too much to risk a bodybag. I'm thinking "tooled". I have purchased a number of coins from this seller and they are fair and honest.
    So, I am still looking for a decent 1899-S Barber Half Dollar. ;o)
    Now I have to decide what to do with the refund!

    So far, this year I've purchased 3, all raw.
     
    1 has been graded. The others will be on their way soon.The first one was an 1856 Seated Liberty which graded XF40.Now I have purchased an 1856-O (in-hand), looks to be an AU. It does have some toning as you can see from the images below. I'm hoping it hasn't been cleaned.And I just now hit the BIN button on an eBay listing. It is an 1899-S which also appears to be in AU condition. Only 1,686,411 were minted, which isn't a whole lot of this demonination. (I got $24 Instant Cashback from MSN Cashback Live, $5 in Ebay Bucks and about $5 in BigCrumbs rebate. I know it isn't a lot, but it does bring the net cost down for the coin. )

    Now that the fractionals are no longer to be minted, I have new motivation to complete the sets.
    I need a total of 17 more 1/4 oz Gold American Eagles to complete both sets. I need 5 Uncirculated and 12 Proof. So far it seems that the Proof 1/4 oz coins are easier to find than the remaining needed Uncirculated 1/4 oz coins. I want to finish them before the prices rise too much more.
    This 2008-W 1/4 oz was purchased on eBay already graded for less than I could buy it from the Mint raw.

    eBay Bucks

    I received an invitation to get a 2% rebate on purchases, so I registered!
    This appears to be a beta test of a new program called eBay Bucks and so far, everything I have looked at shows a 2% rebate with the usual conditions, PayPal, paid quarterly, use it on eBay etc.
    Now, I wonder if I can combine my tiny BigCrumbs rebate along with eBay bucks I can save on every buy!
    I've heard "It's not what you spend but what you save!"

    My copy of "US Early Half Dollar Die Varieties 1794-1836" by Don Parsley has arrived.
    This is a really cool book on Capped Bust Half Dollars. I should be able to attribute die varieties using it. This will probably open a whole new world of CBH's for me.
    The hard covered book has nearly 800 pages with black and white pictures of die states on every page.
    This is my real first coin reference book.

    That's how I came to buy this one! I don't even have a set to put it in.
    I was browsing a coin company's web site and came across this 1852-O Quarter Eagle for what I felt a decently low price.
    It is my 3rd New Orleans minted gold coin. It is graded VF20 and there were 140,000 of them made. It would get 502 Registry points if I had a set for it.
    I think any New Orleans minted gold coin will command a premium in the future, so, click, I bought it.
    It came in today.

    Photo Tip

    My images have improved a lot since i began doing this easy technique!
    It is quite simple. Diffuse the light from your flash with a piece of white paper over the flash.
    I have also been zooming in a bit (while macro is on) so I can move further from the coin.
    Here is one of my recent images using the above technique.

    Actually, it's a bit nicer than the photo in the ad.
    Now that I have the 1899-O Barber Quarter in-hand, I can see that it is not, IMO, uncirculated, let alone MS63. However, it may be an AU58. It is somewhat dark but there is a lot of lustre and the lustre is only broken on the obverse. When you tilt it in the light, there is a golden color to the toning and it is on both sides.
    I will keep it and have it graded (and hope it isn't AT or cleaned, but I am pretty sure it hasn't been cleaned). I hope that I am wrong about AU and get MS!
    If anyone has any comments on this coin and whether I should keep it or you want to guess a grade, I'd appreciate hearing from you!

    New Purchase

    Raw 1899-O Barber Quarter
    Picked up the below 1899-O Barber 25c that is said to be uncirculated and high grade MS63 or 64. I can't wait to see it in "person" and it comes with a 7 day return option. The ad stated that the coin had been in a saftey deposit box for more than 40 years. I hope that it is all original as the picture shows (copied from the ad and rather poor, I will update it here and in my 1899 Mint Set when I have it, whether I keep it or not). 2,644,000 minted.
    I will be heart broken if I keep it and I guessed wrong and it is body bagged. But if it comes back in a new plastic home, I'd be happy with MS62 or higher. But as we all know, that is part of the thrill or addiction of getting coins slabbed.

    I have already started spending it too!
    I am a lucky person right now. I get a healthy tax refund AND my yearly bonus (for 2008) will find its way into my checking account this week.
    So I purchased an 1899 PCGS MS64 Barber Quarter that has been added to my 1899 Mint Set. 12,624,000 of them were minted and this one looks very white and bright. Garners 1483 points in the Registry. Photos as soon as I have the coin in-hand!
    Now the rest of my coin purchases from this money will be gold (unless I break down and buy a 1891-S 25c raw. Graded MS64 in the ad. It looks original from the pics). I have my eye on an 1856-S Half Eagle. I am looking for a raw 1856 Gold Dollar (to get slabbed). And I also have a nice 1891-CC Half Eagle scoped out.
    This is my 1856 raw Quarter Eagle picked up earlier this year.

    UHR Supplies Tight?

    I understand that they are minting an unlimited number of them!
    I hope my understanding is correct. I would like to buy one but it is not in the budget right now. By late spring I will probably be ready but there are so many gold coins I want, will I buy UHR or spend the funds on old gold?

    I bought an 1856 $2.50 Quarter Eagle RAW!
    I was born in 1956, so I decided it would be fun to do a Mint set of circulated 1856 coins. Figuring that as beat up as I am at 53 years old, the coins, being 153, should also show some wear.
    After I started getting the coins and I looked at the 1856 Mint Set in the Registry found that in 1856, 38 different coins were minted. 22 of them were GOLD coins. 16 were silver/copper coins, one copper being the 1856 Flying Eagle 1c (the first of 3 years being minted- in XF40 has $13,000 price tag) and one silver being the 1856 Seated Liberty Silver Dollar which is a comparative bargain in XF40 for only $2000. Additionally the S minted coins are at a premium. So, I certainly will NEVER finish this set.
    Anyway, back to the new coin. Purchased on eBay raw. The coin has a 7 day return policy on it so I just have to show myself and have confidence that I can tell if it will make it into plastic. Looks nice and original from the eBay photo and the seller usually owns up to flaws or problems with his coins in the ads. He only sells un-graded coins from what I have seen of him. Rule of thumb: If a seller sells lots of graded coins, when he/she sells ungraded you gotta wonder why it isn't graded.

    A PCGS AU50 1832 Large Letters Capped Bust Half Dollar- Updated photo!
    Picked up a nice Capped Bust Half dollar that is relatively rare as PCGS has graded 111 of them and NGC has graded 21 of them. 4,797,000 minted of 1832 total and an unknown number of them are the Large Letters variety.
    I bought the coin on eBay for XF dollars. I was ready for the snipers but they never swooped in, so I feel I did real well on this purchase.
    I expect/hope that this year I will buy more vintage coins, mostly gold, than modern bullion now that the platinum and gold fractionals are discontinued.
    It seems that vintage coins hold their value far better than most modern issues. Just my opinion.

    Met some goals in 2008, failed in others. What will 2009 bring?
    In 2008 I set a couple of goals. Some were met others weren't.
    One goal was to buy all of the American Eagles coins for the year for the sets I collect. This goal was met and now that the fractionals will no longer be minted, this is no longer a goal.
    Another goal was to keep new sets down. I started several new sets. 2 of them being Gold Buffalo sets (which turned out to be a smart move. All of the fractionals are now selling for double what I paid for them!) and I also began collecting Capped Bust Halves. So I put this goal in the not met category.
    Goals for 2009 include:
    1) Work on completing my American gold Eagle 1/4 oz sets
    2) Add new coins to my 1891 Mint Set
    3) Add more coins to my Gold Half Eagle sets.
    4) Add more coins to my Gold Buffalo sets
    This is one of my Capped Bust Halves I acquired this year.
