  1. On the contrary, competition is good for the consumer. *If* NGC and PCGS combined to form one company, they could charge whatever they wanted for grading and you'd have to pay it, as you'd have no alternative. That $17 Modern tier could easily be $60 tomorrow if there were no competition. As it stand now, PCGS and NGC can't raise prices too much because then everyone would just use the other (cheaper) service, since both carry roughly the same premium when it comes time to sell. If anything it'd be nice to see a real third competitor enter the market just to help keep prices low and services competitive.

Thank you.  What special label are you speaking of?

I have various special labels (for example the 2009 Bicentennial Lincolns, the Anniversary Eagle sets (20th, 25th), etc) where the slabs are scuffed and scratched (never understand how dealers handle these to get them so scratched up so quickly!) and I was thinking about sending in a batch for scratch-resistant reholding, but wanted to make sure these would retain the special labels despite it not being a bulk submission.

  3. I re-imaged my 1983 birth year mint set recently. I uploaded the new updated photos via the new registry and everything looks fine there. But those same coins on the old registry still feature the old images when looking at the smaller thumbnail images (in the gallery/slideshow views).

So I went back and deleted all of the images for all coins in that set, assuming that would get rid of those old thumbnail previews. Then I re-uploaded the new images, but the old registry is still showing the old thumbnails.

Any info on how to get those thumbnails updated to the new images? (you can tell they're old because I updated my watermark for the new images, the watermark with the red circle is the new image, the watermark with the cursive "L" is the old image)

    Set in question: https://coins.www.collectors-society.com/registry/coins/SetGallery.aspx?PeopleSetID=182182

The cent and nickle have the new images because they never had old images, but the dime, quarter, and half all have the old images as thumbnails.

Thanks for any info you can provide.

  4. If I want to reholder a few coins in new scratch-resistant holders, will they retain their special labels even if I'm not a bulk submitter? Should I notate this on the invoice or will they automatically be printed on the same label stock as they currently have? Thanks!

  5. 2019 was a good, but extremely short, year for me coin-wise. I got back into buying again after being away for four years. So I have big hopes for 2020 as I rebuild my collection. To that end, I just found out I won a HUGE coin (made an offer at Heritage on an inventory item that they accepted) that has been on my want list for the last ten years. It won't be here for a little while but I can't wait to see it in hand and write up a Journal entry featuring it.

As for my area of focus, I'll probably get back into things with a type set. A type set will allow me to dip my toe back in slowly and allow for wide reading and research before digging too deep into any one series.

  6. 1983 is my birth year so I put together a mint and proof birth year set.

As a point of reference (so you have something to compare yours to), here are my two 1983 MS halves. Normally I wouldn't have sent coins like this in for grading, I would just buy them in the grade I wanted, but this set was built from a collection of coins my dad saved for me, so there's way more sentimental value than financial value.

The P is graded NGC MS 65:

And the D is graded NGC MS 66: (the back of the slab is a little scuffed up between 8 and 10 o'clock)

  7. Thanks all for the advice and feedback, looks like most here are trusting, and that's good. I sell and buy a ton on eBay and other forums with feedback features and I've never been screwed, but the potential is always there. Coin forums can sometimes feel like the wild west unless you're dealing with someone you've known for a while. I think we'll move forward privately and I'll hope for the best.

  8. Well if I send the seller a check, where's the guarantee I get my coins? If I send the seller paypal, what's the guarantee I don't get a box of bricks with an insured tracking number? And on the seller's end, how is he guaranteed I won't file a false refund request via PayPal once I have the coins? I don't know this seller outside of a few emails over the last two days, and he doesn't know me.

The dealer would be a trusted third party that I could send my check to, and the seller could send his coins to, and then when the dealer has received both, they could mail me my coins and the seller his money. This ensures we both get what we want without any worry.

  9. I'm talking to another individual who wishes to sell a very high priced coin collection. I'm interested in buying, but don't feel comfortable with a private transaction at these numbers (five figures). Would contacting a dealer and paying them a small fee to act as a broker for the transaction make sense? Is that something dealers offer?

  10. I did a search but couldn't find any info on the new registry and photo size limit.

I'm currently working on re-imaging all of my coins as I only have low-res images saved (in hindsight I should have saved the raw files, but I plan to do that going forward).

I know the old registry was pretty skimpy on file sizes, but the new registry specifically advertises hi-res images. Are there file size (MBs) or photo size (pixels) limitations and if so, what are those limits? Thanks!

  11. Hey everyone, my grandpa is downsizing his collection and isn't very internet savvy so he asked me to sell off his Indian Head Cent collection (and a few other Mint products). All of the coins are raw in flips and mostly very low grade, but he has a complete set including the key 1877 (which I sent off to NGC yesterday).

Everything else is up on eBay right now if there are any Indian Head collectors here looking to fill some holes: https://www.ebay.com/sch/alanjoseph4/m.html

(I'll combine shipping if you win more than one lot)

Tell us more about the lawsuit. Most likely involves promises (functionality) made (and/or milestones missed). Shame, but I hope NGC is compensated well. I view the registry using both the the old and new software.

This is all I've read so far: https://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20190808005907/en/Certified-Collectibles-Group-Files-Lawsuit-Alleging-Tens

Looks like they spent quite a bit on the new Registry software and the firm dramatically under-delivered.

  13. I've been out of the hobby for the last 2-3 years as I moved to a new state, sold my old home, and bought a new home. I'm just getting back into the swing of things with a new purchase this week, my first in years. I came back to find the forum basically empty and the registry changes very confusing and unorganized. I see now that the registry software is a bit incomplete and a lawsuit with the company who built it is pending. That's a mess I'm sure NGC is extremely unhappy about.

So I understand the decision to revert to letting PCGS coins in again as a way to boost use of the current (incomplete) registry. I do hope they get it fixed soon, the new system is very confusing and inelegant when compared with the old system. And if allowing PCGS coins boosts numbers (visits and profits), more power to them, I'd rather see NGC flourishing than floundering.

  14. For anyone considering building their own independent competitive registry (there's been quite a bit of talk about it here), it would be nearly impossible. Neither NGC nor PCGS offer an API for their certification look-up tools, so you couldn't authenticate that any given coin is the grade the user says it is. Meaning there is a lot of room for abuse (I create a collection of double eagles and say they're all MS 70, who can prove me wrong? Or I create a type set and add all of Bill's certification numbers in my slots, will your software stop me? Will you offer enough customer support to address Bill's concerns when he writes to you about it?).

At best you could hire someone to manually look up the certification numbers and approve listings as they come in, but that would be a full time job (and the registry definitely would not produce enough traffic to pay for itself, let alone hiring someone on salary). And then you'd have to add in ANACS and ICG, again, no API tool for certification look ups (and remember, everyone wants the registry to be inclusive so the top four at a minimum should be included).

Then there are the competitive sets themselves. How do you go about building those with everyone wanting so many specialized sets, and people arguing over which coins should be included and which shouldn't. Me personally, I'd use some kind of third-party standard, like the Red Book. If it's listed in the Red Book, it's in the competitive set. So if you want your highly-specialized variety in the competitive set, petition the Red Book, not the registry. But that only works for the US. There is no Red Book for Canadian coins, or Australia's mint, etc.

Then the scoring... population reports are changing every day, and again, no API tool. So how do you determine the score for any coin in any grade? PCGS's approach of grade x multiplier for rarity is a bit cleaner than NGC's algo, but still requires you to assign a rarity multiplier to every single coin.

Taking the above into consideration the only real choice is to build a showcase site, non-competitive, that lets you build custom sets. But CollectiveCoin and even Photobucket already allow you to do this, so I'm not sure there's a need for yet another site.

All that to say, I own registrysets.com but I'm not sure there's anything that can be done with it.

  15. According to a response on another forum on this topic the ANA DOES have some sort of neutral registry. But it isn't widely used.

The ANA doesn't have a registry, they have a section where you can upload photos of your coins, like photobucket or collectivecoin. This could be developed into a registry at some point, but it is not currently anything close to a registry. Just wanted to clear that up for anyone who hasn't logged in to their ANA account to check it out. :)

  16. Hi, Alan.

Thanks for the requests. The Niue slot is available for you now. Can you please provide your certification numbers for the Canada Gold coins that you would like to see in a new set? Our World graders will consider the request.

If you click below, you may see the Maple sets we have available currently. Thank you.

    Canada- Bullion Sets

Thanks Ali, the Canada Gold coin is 3736394-096 (this is the only one from the set I currently own, but hope to pick up more in the future), as I mentioned before there are seven coins in the series currently, 2007-2009, 2011, 2012, 2014, 2015. The first three were leaf designs, 2011 is a Mountie, 2012 is back to the leaf, and starting in 2014 each coin now has a "Call of the Wild" theme, so 2014 is a wolf, 2015 is a cougar.

The denomination is $200 so they should probably be a separate set from the $50 1oz gold bullion coins (also the purity is higher at "five nines").

    Thanks!

  17. Hey Ali, any update on these two items?

    >> World Sets >> Niue >> Silver $1, 2007-Date, Proof for the 2014 Niue S$1 Antonio Stradivari Colorized coin. My cert number is 2798424-001 for that coin.

    >> there doesn't seem to be a registry set for the RCMP .99999 gold maple leaf series yet. There are seven coins in the series currently, 2007-2009, 2011, 2012, 2014, 2015. (my cert number for the 2011 is 3736394-0096)

    Thanks.

  18. Hey Ali, thanks for adding those Canadian slots. As I get more into foreign coins, you might be seeing a lot of me here, sorry!!

I have another request, there doesn't seem to be a registry set for the RCMP .99999 gold maple leaf series yet. There are seven coins in the series currently, 2007-2009, 2011, 2012, 2014, 2015. The first three were leaf designs, 2011 is a Mountie, 2012 is back to the leaf, and starting in 2014 each coin now has a "Call of the Wild" theme, so 2014 is a wolf, 2015 is a cougar.

My cert is 3736394-096. The denomination on these are $200 so they should probably be a separate registry set form the standard 1oz gold maple leafs.
