Is star better than PL?

Here is my interpretation.

In your particular case with the MS63*, NO the star designation is not better than the same coin in MS64PL, IF you are looking at the Registry score and the sggested PCGS Value of the coin.

The registry score for an MS63* is 143. For an MS64PL, it is 234.

The PCGS price guide gives the value for an MS63 @ $64 and an MS64 @ $120. Given these values, the value of the MS63* is probably around $100. The price of the MS64PL is listed at $120.

The * designation is given to coins in the Mint State category to show the coin has above average, excellent, superior eye appeal. NGC believes these coins are extremely pleasing to the viewer's eyes.

The PL coins are simply that. They are Mint State coins that have PL surfaces and contrast on the devices.

Since these are both subjective ratings just like grades, it is up to the owner of a coin to decide which coin is more valuable, the * designated coin or the PL designated coin.

Hope this helps clarify your question!

Michael
