The Patina Collection - what, where and how many

The Patina collection of 'fantasy' coins was auctioned by Spink, London in July 2001. Not sure as to what to designate these pieces however they do look most lovey.

Not much is written or recorded in depth of these fantasy coins and obtaining a copy of the Spink catalog is almost near impossible.

Discussions on several numismatic web forums reveal only a small amount of information pertaining to the Patina collection.

If you do not own a catalog it is somehow hard to verify information on a suspected Patina fantasy coin should you wish to acquire or come across one.

A few interesting questions comes to mind:

1. From the Patina collection which Fantasy coin is the rarest of the lot?

2. Do they hold a market value given they are not authorized coinage?

3. Should future numismatic catalogs list all of them in detail?

4. How can a collector obtain a copy of the Spink Patina catalog?

Should any collector have photos and wish to share information to help ID or clarify varieties or simple provide information to verify real Patina pieces vs restrikes or fakes - then please feel free to share your information.

Went to look for a copy of the Patina catalog on Spink web site and it is out of stock. It has been like that for perhaps 2 years or more. Any person have a spare copy or can send a photo copy? :nyah:

In my estimation, Spink should have this catalog scanned into the Newman Numismatic Portal. That said, if you do a search there using only the words "Spink Auction" it will return 591 records found. I own an 1879 copper "Three Graces" Spink fantasy coin with the "Penny Black" rendition of Queen Victoria. That said, its like pulling teeth to find any information beyond that of this beautiful fantasy coin. Good luck wading through 591 records. I hope you find somewhere in those records the information you seek. Gary. https://nnp.wustl.edu/library/searchwithterms?searchterm=spink auction

The following is a link to the write-up of this fantasy coin in my collection https://coins.www.collectors-society.com/wcm/coinview.aspx?sc=611230

Thank you coinsbygary for the link and lovely pics. I did notice some information in the archives covering the three graces. There is so much missing information covering the Patina pieces but this could be a good forum to commence a compilation of pictures et al.

Still cannot obtain a Patina catalog - you would think Spinks would have uploaded it by now :(

...they will eventually, but very low priority n very little interest in that "collection"...seriously doubt if the catalog would ever be reprinted....
