RE: Re: NGC vs. PCGS
NGC enhances value by its inclusiveness.
PCGS has a fanatic following from people who still believe that it applies stricter grading criteria than any other TPG. Population reports suggest that it may be true only of MS70 or PR70 grades in modern coins. Also, there is some speculation that PCGS may be keeping the 70s tight only to serve its dealers' network. Regardless of the reason, the effect is that there is a market premium for PCGS coins, even in lower grades. I do not beleive that the PCGS's restriction of PCGS only graded coins in its registry sets contributes to its higher market value. The proof lies in the fact that the PCGS premium was prevalent even before the existence of registry sets. As for NGC, I like what they are doing. By including PCGS coins in its registry, it enhances the value of NGC coins. PCGS registry was a first of its kind, an innovation. With NGC's inclusive registry, many collectors, including yours truly, migrated sets from PCGS registry to NGC registry. As a result, I am more willing to forego a PCGS coin and buy an NGC graded coin than I was before. NGC is open, inclusive and transparent to the collector, and that is to its credit. To that, I say Bravo NGC, and keep it up.
