NGC Turn-Around times

Really! When can a customer expect a company to do right by them? When it comes to NGC and their grading times I never know what to expect. I have taken a long lay-off from this society and NGC for this very reason and it hasn't got any better! NGC charges extra exorbitant fees in order to process coins faster but is it really faster. Example, I have one gold Kennedy that I put through as express. This tier is suppose to have a 48 hour turn-around. It currently says three working days on the w

American Eagles

It's that time. No, I'm not quitting this hobby! I love it too much! However, I am selling my proof American Eagles to those who wish to make offers. I am going to keep all of the ones that are part of sets such as the 2006, 2011 and 2012 sets but all others are up for grabs. I have decided that with all of the research into Jefferson Nickels I will give them a run for awhile as well as Indian Head Half Eagles. I tend to like the older coins more anyway and they make way too many Eagles to kee

Had to give it a go

Finally decided to send it back in for another look even though it most likely isn't worth it! Some of you will remember this 1960 nickel from before. After looking at dozens upon dozens of 1960 nickels, I have decided to send it in for a relook. It is currently at grading/quality control so it will be soon that I find out the verdict. This coin has obvious signs of a proof but it also has signs of many of the MS coins I have seen as well. I'm hoping for a proof strike on an MS planchet. Yes,

Proof or Not?

Opinions Please! I need to know opinions as to whether this coin is Proof or MS as graded before I send it back for mechanical error. I have asked several coin dealers here in Washington State that seem to think it is an MS. However, there are others including a member of this society who need not respond or be named that believe it to be a proof. Honestly, I've had my doubts as the obverse looks proofish but the reverse looks MSish, especially in the sun. I do not want to waste my money or ti

Help

Nickel Education! I recently had a 1960 Nickel graded and I would like to know an approximate value from all of the nickel experts. I don't collect them and I received this one FREE and it seems as though there are none graded higher and this is only one of eight at this grade. Please tell me if I'm correct. 2006 Anniversary Set feeler message

Gold Is there anyone interested in a 2006 Gold Eagle Anniversary set? All coins are NGC 70 graded. Contact me or look at my profile for information on the set and I'll entertain reasonable offers. To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. New comments can be added below.

Ethics!

Where did they go? In this world today there seems to have been a loss of ethics and morals. I know I'll catch you know what for writing this but who cares! Everyone especially on this site and in coin collecting knows how many people wanted those 25th Anniversary sets. The Mint put a limit of (5) yes five, cinco on those sets. Now there are people like Gino bragging about getting 12 by usurping the system using multiple terminal and log ins. Then they go on Ebay and practically want you to ha

Bumper Crop

When Gino, Where did you find the information about an anniversary set this year? The U.S. Mint website doesn't list it at all. I'm very interested in this and would like to know when it expected release is. I would truely appreciate the information if you can give it to me. Turnaround Times

Modern Tier In response to S. Trzebiatowski, I have had some luck keeping the turn around times on time. It has been my experience that the lower modern tier is on par with times. It is when people flood the upper tiers with special label requests and Early Release Labels that clog the upper tiers and extending their process times. If you can live with a graded coin with a normal non-specialized label, I recommend the modern tier or basic tier fitting your coins specific need for age and dolla

RE: Points System

I agree in a way! I think you are dead on in a lot of respects but also think it is about the points for you as well. Many people collect the fodder because they can't afford the older gold coins you speak of that normally reach well above a thousand at least. I'll grant that many of the modern items are junk at best and that is why the majority of the modern stuff I have are bullion coins such as ASE's and Gold Buffalo coins neither of which will ever be worthless in any respect. For all of t

RE: This and That

Why or Why Not? I think the reason they don't specify what the defect is that caused the not genuine grade is that they don't want the counterfeiters to know what to correct next time. I do think the honest need to know so they can know what to look for, but how do the honest get the info without telling the crook also. Which company made the mistake here, PCGS or NGC, that is also important to know. It seems that one of them has a grading problem or possible integrity issue. Every coin I've s

Grading Standards

What a difference between companies!! This coin was graded MS 70 from SGS. It came back as an MS 62 from NGC. Keep in mind I did this as a test of standards for both companies and to learn some of the finer points myself. It is just a shock that there are people really off the mark grading coins at some places. To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. New comments can be added below.

Mixed Emotions

When to release a coin sold Here I sit with strong feelings on both sides of the fence about when a "person" should release a sold coin from their collection. As I've stated in the past I fully believe that an individual has the right to protect their property and themselves until the transfer is verified complete. I now have a coin I purchased on Ebay almost two weeks ago that the individual still hasn't released and NGC has not forced the exchange. I have the coin and proof that it was purch

RE: What can we do?

Agree and Disagree Although I agree with the vast majority of what W.K.F. states in his post there are two points in which I tend to disagree a little bit. The first lies in that NGC only adds points for a coin registered in one or more sets just once. So, your point total for all sets is not affected by having the same coin in more than one set at all. The second is that I have trouble seeing the problem with someone protecting themselves from theft as well. The seller of a coin has a right t

Slab-Renew

Who Knew? learned a lesson today that I really was surprised to find out. I was polishing one of my NGC certified slabbed coins and low and behold Slab Renew removes the Hologram from the slab. Yes part of the hologram on my 20th Anniversary PF70 Silver Eagle is gone along with some of the scratches. So to all who use slab renew DO NOT get it on the hologram or it will not be there long. RE Kamakazy

Don't Blame You! It has taken alot of effort and alot of money just to get to where I'm at in the registry and it is nothing short of fraud to electronicly boost someones property. I register every slabbed coin I get and when I sell them on Ebay I keep them registered until the rightful owner receives it in order to keep some jack@#$ from "borrowing" it. It may be a slight problem but at least only people who have a right can use the number. This also allows people to look it up and verify the

ASE

Another Idea I personally don't bother with getting MS ASE coins graded as many of them have contact marks. I only concentrate my effort to the Proof coins. The problem in my opinion lies with businesses and the way they are package by the mint. When jammed in rolls and boxes the contact marks are practically unavoidable. If the mint were to adopt an idea such as the plastic holders like Australian coins are shipped in then I think many more would deserve the 70 label.

IKE Variety If there is a variety in 1972 I'd also like to know what it is as I'm trying to make sure I have them all. I do know that my Dansco album doesn't have a space for a variety in 1972. The varieties are in 1976 and the way to tell the difference is in the letter size. Either narrow or fat letters. If anyone has better information on any other varieties please let me know also.

Bulk vs Single

I do try. I try and shy away from bulk graded coins. My reasoning is not just the grade and quality factors but it also has to do with prices. Bulk submissions are done by dealers. (shocking huh) Dealers are rightfully out to make money and they tend to price their items higher than individual investors that submit single coins.

Keeping with Tradition

Where's the Luck With the recent return of my latest submission I still haven't been able to get an ASE to grade 70! My anniversary set all received a 69. I did however get a surprise in that my 1970 S Nickel received a better than expected MS 66. In all not one silver coin I have submitted has reached over a 69. I'm not sure why ELL is saying NGC is easy on grading after all of the ones I have submitted in total. My Gold has a much better average though.

Re: What should I do

Go with the gut! It really does look like it may be overgraded. From my point of view photos don't lie but they can be deceptive. In the end it doesn't matter what everyone else will say, go with your gut. If it says send it back that's what I'd do because if you don't follow your feelings you'll constantly kick yourself for it.

Foreign Coin Luck

What's up with that I have finally narrowed my colleting tastes down to just a few sets and have received my lastest submissions to NGC back. It seems that all of my US coins I submit seem to do real well. For example my last submission resulted in four out of five coins reaching 70UC while my ASE received a 69. My Australian Kookaburras and Koalas however not one has yet to reach the 70 plateau. I have decided I'm pefectly happy with the Kookaburra collection where it's at even with two of

Re: Obscured Collections

Safety Any coin I have of any real value is in a bank vault and not at my house. I will never use my Ebay "handle" anywhere else. I've seen exactly what Augustus is talking about and how "people" with no conscience will take advantage of a collector if possible.

Happiness

Postal and more In response to those upset about big money do like I do, yet another little guy, I collect for me to see what I can get by the luck of the draw. Check my Kookaburra collection "Coo Coo for Kookaburras" for example. These are the ones I received from the Perth Mint directly not a coin dealer. My good news of the day is that the USPS did in fact find both of my packages after curing the cranialrectumitis problem they determined they weren't really lost just behind schedule. Th
