Can anyone tell me about this coin?

What is VAM-11 and hot-50 mean? For that matter, what does the sticker indicate (the 1880/9). Any estimates of the value of this coin. I am selling it on behalf of a friend and do not know much about Morgans!

Thanks, Jeff

Okay, I just thought perhaps you overlooked an obvious source. VAM is short for Van Allen and Mallis, the authors who put together the VAM book of Morgan and Peace die pairings. VAM-11 happens to be this coins die pair and it is a Hot-50 variety, which means that it is one of the 50 popular varieties listed in a book of popular VAMs. The 1880/9 notation means that the 0 in the date was placed over a 9. There is a website devoted to VAMs and I think it might be called VAM World, this might help with prices.

If it is indeed a VAM-11, this is one of the HOT-50 VAMs that NGC recognizes. You can submit your coin for variety attribution under NGC's Designation Review service. The fee is $10, which includes both the attribution and a fresh holder.

From the look of it I would say it's right.. These are the prices at the bottom of the page..

I always check these for a cherry pick opportunity.. But look at these 2 coins that are in bold...The holder adds or decreases the price...

Thanks for the information. I went to that site and sure enough, the "0" in the date has the exact same markings underneath it as the example - that's pretty cool. Is it worth it in terms of value to have this reviewed for this attribute - assuming that it will be sold.

Jeff

P.S. This coin is so cool I may have to keep it!
