I have a hoard of Morgans! Any Advice

15 posts in this topic

Hi, I was just put in charge of submitting/selling these listed Morgans. They are all in slabs ranging from NGC to NNC and are all listed as MS66 or above. I realize that some of these slabbed coins are over graded but my question is this. Could any of these morgans be worth more than the cost to get them regraded and slabbed by NGC. If there are any key dates I would be willing to post a picture for a grade estimate!

Jeff

I would see no reason to have any of the NGC slabbed coins resubmitted for regrading. How many and which ones in the list are NNC.

Jeff, without (at a minimum) seeing images of the coins, we'd have no way to know whether it would be worth it financially to try to cross any of the coins to NGC holders. Good images might help considerably.

Looks like a list of common dates to me. The 1882-CC is the best date in the bunch, and that is among the most common of all CC coins. Most of them are probably not worth the expense of the postage and the slabbing fees. And given the fact that the common date Morgan market has had its promotion and has now gone dormant, there's not a lot of incentive to spend more money on these coins in the short run.

The only way that any of them are with the grading costs would be if the coin in question is truly outstanding. Only an expert looking at them in person can determine that.

If you have a relationship with a dealer who knows his stuff, you could ask for opinions. Otherwise looking at the list, I'd say there is nothing really outstanding on it.

I agree with Rey, if you can tell us which ones are graded by NGC and which ones by any other company that would help. Photos would help for those not graded by NGC.

sounds like the cross overs would be the question here.focus on the odd balls first.

also just for a quik question since it was mentioned.why are there sooooo many 82-83-84 cc morgans out there? gsa seemed to have most of those dates and i dont see why :(

not trying to jump on thread here just asking which will hopfully help both of us :)

All of these coins are valuable in the grades listed. According to which coin is in which holder and whether the 79 S coins are 2nd or 3rd revision as to great value.

The 82 CC could be quite valuable if in an NGC/PCGS holder as would be the 1890 P MS65 and MS66. The 1891 P would be the most valuable if indeed MS67.

As I first stated all of these coins would be valuable in these grades. These are the best grades you will find for Morgans, so if they are not mostly NNC's then great find. Good luck. Relist how they are holdered and you will get a greater reaction.

I did not intend on having them regraded just wondered if any of them were worth crossing over. I was really interested in if there were any key dates that I should look for and then look at grade to see if it was worth it. I did a little looking in the red book and a few of these dates have some decent value in higher grades including: the 1879S, 1890P, 1891P, 1882CC.

I have attached some pictures to see if the grades estimated on this board are even close to the grades listed on the slabs - this is for my education too. I do suspect that some of these may have been cleaned.

Thanks for judging,

Jeff

Not that I know much about Morgans, but I would bet my collection of gold that that 1884 has been cleaned to death. :P

The 1891 dollar is only a AU with smooth surfaces. The mint surface has been rubbed off on the high points.

The 1884 has been cleaned and could grade no better than AU-50 if it had been left alone.

The 1879 would grade MS-63 IMO. The abrasions on the face of Ms. Liberty are too noticeable to allow any higher grade.

The 1882, which I take it is the 1882-CC MS-66, Proof like might be OK for the grade. The picture has some odd reflections it that make it hard to grade. Even so the chances of the coin upgrading to MS-67 are probably remote.

Never mentioned what you plan on doing with them. If just keeping them, then just keep them as they are. If your planning on selling them, then again I would suggest you just sell them as is. If your planning on giving them away, then leave then as they are. The only reason you should open those slabs is if you plan on taking them to a bank and depositing them. The banks have a problem with those plastic things in thier counters.
