1813 20 franc (can it be saved)

2 posts in this topic

Another of my finds is this 1813 Napoleon 20 franc coin.

Excuse my lack of photography skills, this actually came out cleaner looking in the pics than real life. If you notice around the lettering especially the obverse, the coin appears dirty with crud on it.

Do you handle these types of coins? If you do, is there anything that conservation can do to help it?

While I would not be able to evaluate your coin for certain without seeing, we likely would be able to help your coin. There appears to be some dark residue around the features of the design which likely could be removed. We have been successful with similar coins with similar looks. Without seeing the coin, however, I would not be able to say for certain.
