1897 double eagle

I have a raw 1897 double eagle, that has spent the last 30-40 years in a kraft paper envelope.


There is a streak of "crud" that runs from about 5 o'clock to about 10 o'clock in the middle of the reverse of the coin

From your image it is difficult to tell what is causing the streak which would determine how successful we might be in removing it. This coin would have to be submitted in order for us to examine it in person.
