I'm talking with some specialists in the field of 3CN and there's some interest in creating another reference guide (I can't say more than that now). Who knows maybe there will be a new book? The fact is, there are very few 3CN collectors in the country. Because the interest is so darn low, the prices are kept very cheap for mintages (and survival rates) that in other series would cost thousands, if not tens of thousands of dollars to get an example.

If you're interested in starting to collect them...what's stopping you? The prices are cheap for all but a handful of them. What information would you like to see that hasn't already been printed about them?

You pose a very good question about some really interesting and pretty coins that I love seeing pictures of, but they're just too darn small for my eyes...so I couldn't choose an answer to your question...i.e., none of the above!!! grin.gif

My first certified coin purchase in the 80's was a PR65 3CN. I've long since sold that piece but feel that covers me for a lifetime! wink.gif

I am definitely in it for the business strikes! The proofs don't do much for me though. Owning a single proof example would be enough for me.

I'm trying to put together an average UNC set (MS-63 +/-), and it is much tougher than most people realize.

I put together date set with a mixture of MS and proofs several years ago. Au to proof.

I also did the 3¢Silvers at the same time. Au to proof.

I finished both in Dec.2001 and haven't bought one since.

I even bought one from James Garcia at the Central States show when it was in Indianapolis.

I love the little guys. They are interesting, and whenever I mention the 3 cent piece to my friends I get this odd look. As I mentioned in a thread not too long ago, I would love to start a high circulated set of the oddball denominations in the near future (2, 3, and 20 cent). Really, the only thing stopping me right now is that I don't have any money. But when I get money (hopefully soon, now that I am graduated), I will be far more likely to collect them if there is a bright new book on the market. I would hate to try and do it blind. I guess I'm just a sucker for the coins nobody likes.

I would like to have a proof cameo at some point, but that is about it. In terms of value, I would classify them as relatively inexpensive compared to other US coins.

I have a book written by David Bowers which includes this denomination. It was written in the 1980's.

I have been slowly accumulating business strikes. Mine are mostly circulated. I have all the common dates and a few of the better dates ('79, '88), but the key business strikes . . . . Well, let's just say I'd have to get good at telling the bussiness strikes from the proofs first.

I like them because they're not made anymore. But they are expensive for well-struck high-quality ones, and I want to finish some other sets first.

I like 3CN but probably not enough to collect them. I feel the same way about shield nickels, just better places to put my collecting dollar. Who knows, maybe one nice example some day!
