Mark Your Calendars: First Spouse Gold Coins Available June 19

Martha Washington, Abigail Adams Coins First in Series Featuring Women

WASHINGTON—The United States Mint reminds customers that it will begin taking orders for the Martha Washington and Abigail Adams First Spouse Gold Coins beginning at 12:00 noon (ET) on June 19, 2007. This is the first time the United States Mint has offered a series of coins that will honor women.

Containing a half-ounce of pure gold, each coin is available in proof or uncirculated versions. The proof coin sells for $429.95, and the uncirculated coin sells for $410.95. Both coins are encapsulated in plastic and housed in a highly polished, custom-designed presentation case, accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity. Mintage of each coin is limited to 40,000 across both product options with a household limit of five units for each option.

The Martha Washington and Abigail Adams First Spouse Gold Coins are the first coins released in the First Spouse Gold Coin series, authorized by the Presidential $1 Coin Act of 2005. Duplicate bronze medals are also available for $3.50. There are no mintage levels for the medals.

Designed and sculpted by United States Mint Medallic Sculptor Joseph Menna, the obverses (heads side) of the Martha Washington and Abigail Adams First Spouse Gold Coins include their names, the years and order of their service as first spouse, and “In God We Trust” and “Liberty.” The coins also bear the year “2007.”

The Martha Washington reverse was designed by Artistic Infusion Program (AIP) Master Designer Susan Gamble, of Arlington, Virginia, and sculpted by United States Mint Sculptor-Engraver Don Everhart. The design depicts the future First Lady sewing a button onto her husband’s uniform jacket. During the Revolutionary War, Martha Washington’s concern for the colonial soldiers earned their lasting respect and admiration.

The Abigail Adams reverse was designed by Thomas Cleveland of Houston, Texas, an AIP Master Designer. The image was sculpted by Phebe Hemphill, a United States Mint Medallic Sculptor. The reverse design features the inscription “Remember the Ladies,” a request she made in one of her most memorable letters to her husband, John Adams, when he was creating the framework of the new Republic. The reverse of both coins include the inscriptions “United States Of America,” “E Pluribus Unum,” “$10,” “1/2 oz.” and “.9999 Fine Gold.”

Customers can place their orders for the First Spouse Gold Coins and duplicate bronze medals via the United States Mint’s website at www.usmint.gov or by calling 1-800-USA-MINT. A shipping and handling fee of $4.95 per order will be added to all domestic orders.
