Just a reminder to nobody in particular: When you include a huge image in your post, you stretch the entire thread out sideways so much that nobody can easily read the content any more. I run a 1024x768 monitor (which I think is average for most users these days) and any images over around 850 pixels wide stretch the threads so much I have to scroll left and right to read.

If you want to include a great big pic, by all means do - but please do it as a link to the pic so that others can actually read the threads! I'm not trying to boss anyone around; just help others enjoy the forum more.

You can set Internet Explorere to automatically resize images, and they will then be sized down to the width of your browser, thus getting rid of the horizontal scrolling problem.

Tools -> Internet Options -> Advanced

... and in the "Multimedia" section, check "Enable automatic image resizing".

That may help reduce the annoyance (but it won't improve loading time of the image).

I know what you are saying. I have to run at 800x600 because of my old eyes. It's probably going to be imposible to get everyone to post small images. I'm thinking that even 800x will streatch the screen. I don't see an answer that will work for all.

The above image is fine. And James, you're assuming that everyone is running IE. Some of us (a growing number of us) don't. And even if we did, there's no reason why we should have to change our preferences just to read this forum site.

I whole-heartedly agree with Michael!

If you use a site like photobucket, they have uploading options that will automatically resize your images to an appropriate size for the forums.

James,

I am aware of the image resize option in IE (also available in Netscape), but it doesn't work on inline images in a webpage - just on individual images loaded by themselves in the browser.

Chad,

That's a good option for those who use photobucket, but not for those who use the forum's upload feature. It's not a difficult matter to simply resize your images in any image editor, including many that are freely available. It's a basic skill, no more difficult than copying or pasting.

It was just too easy to pass-up wink.gif

Now if Winston edited his initial post and put in 1024x768 we will know that that is max and make this post actually helpful instead of NOT !!!

The width of an image that can be posted without expanding a window depends on the resolution of a given monitor. The average resolution used by most people used to be 800x600. Today I think the average is 1024x768. Between the scroll bar and the indent generated by the NGC forums, an image can't really be much larger than 850 pixels wide before it stretches a window running in a 1024x768 environment. Can people running higher resolutions see bigger images without stretch? Yes, but most people (i.e., those running 1024x768 or higher) are better off if image width is 850 or less. For monitors running 800x600 - I'm afraid you're simply becoming obsolete.

Winston, delete that junk before I come up there and scrub your coins with a brillo pad. sumo.gif

I have found that 800x600pix has been a good enough size to properly be able to grade the condition of a coin. I have dropped mine to a smaller size now and then just to show the coin. But I agree, 800pix is a good size for coins. I actually think any larger pix and every flaw will show more and the coin get worse reviews than what it might get! 27_laughing.gif

That's a rather arrogant comment - I hope you didn't mean it that way. To begin with, there's no reason whatsoever for people to buy bigger monitors just to view one site. Secondly, the average user today is running 1024x768 - that's plenty big. Those of us who post images here should respect the majority of visitors by posting appropriately-sized images. That's a position the board management has held for years - the FAQ requests that people try and keep their sig image sizes around 125x600.
