Is there anything I can do to fix it, or at least be able to read the date.

You might try setting it in some dip for a while. Probably won't be worth anything but it may eat away some of the corrosion. It's a shame cause it looks like a possible 1880 something?

Back to the coin. It looks like it's either an 83, or an 73 so know big deal.

I will guarentee you it's from the 1800's.

 

BTW, I think I need to get some of these iffy coins to experiment with.

Nic-a-date might restore the date enough to read it, but it would also probably destroy whatever minor residual numismatic value remains in this coin.

 

Although it's very hard to read, I think I see the wide date logotype that was only used in 1883. In which case, you might as well experiment with it since 1883s are common.

I'm with Skippy, the date logotype is very wide which makes it an 1883.
