What is up with this sheild nickel?

You might try setting it in some dip for a while. Probably won't be worth anything but it may eat away some of the corrosion. It's a shame cause it looks like a possible 1880 something?

Back to the coin. It looks like it's either an 83, or an 73 so know big deal.

Nic-a-date might restore the date enough to read it, but it would also probably destroy whatever minor residual numismatic value remains in this coin.

 

Although it's very hard to read, I think I see the wide date logotype that was only used in 1883. In which case, you might as well experiment with it since 1883s are common.
