GRADING MINT ERRORS

5 posts in this topic

I just got this back from NGC today. (Yes, I'm a procrastinator! I've had this since the fall of 2005.) In another thread, I posted the grade and Bruce commented that he didn't think that a mint error could get a PF70. Well, obviously they can, but what are your thoughts? 1778330-IMG_1557.JPG

I wouldn't see any reason why if a coin is in perfect condition but has a US Mint error, not a circulating error, that PF70 wouldn't be an appropriate grade.

I've heard differing opinions on whether mint errors should get 70s or not. I guess it really depends on what kind of error. For example, I see no reason why a die error wouldn't get a 70. However, you would never see a strike through get a 70, but it also is a perfectly legitimate mint error.

The coin in this case can be worthy of a 70 grade because THE COIN IS NOT AN ERROR! On the contrary, it is exactly what should have resulted from the use of that particular set of dies. The reverse die itself if graded could not receive a 70, though. wink.gif
