Proof Trade Dollar - can anything be done?

2 posts in this topic

This coin is in a PCGS PR64 holder, but I find the toning to be fairly unattractive - especially on the reverse. The surfaces are bright with a light blue toning and some ugly brown streaks that give it a blotchy look.

Can anything be done to improve the appearance and do you have any opinion on the chances of it either upgrading or downgrading?

It would appear from the image that this coin may have some residues. These residues could likely be addressed with professional conservation. Seeing this coin in person is a must, however, to give you a clear idea of what might or might not be done to help it. What something appears to be in an image can sometimes be deceiving.

The grade I would not be able to comment on at all without seeing the piece. When the coin is evaluated, the evaluators will look to be sure that at least the currently stated grade will be maintained through the conservation process. There is a possibility it will upgrade though most coins will remain the same grade following conservation with much increased eye appeal and long-term storage stability.
