Sacagawea Proof Coin Prices Seem Unusual!

15 posts in this topic

I am a fairly new coin collector, and my main focus is U.S. Mint products.

For some time now, I have been puzzled by the prices in the Coin Dealer Newsletter (and other publications) regarding the Sacagawea proof coins, principally the price for the 2004 proof. I will try to include a table to illustrate my puzzlement. The mintage figures were obtained from the RED BOOK for 2000-2005 while the 2006 figures are found in the Numismatic News

2000 4,047,993 $9.50

2001 3,184,606 53.00

2002 3,211,995 17.50

2003 3,298,439 3.75

2004 2,992,069 5.50

2005 3,273,000 7.00

2006* 2,993,655 7.50

* The 2006 proof sets are still being sold.

It seems unusual to me that the lowest mintage Sac (2004) and probably the only one with a mintage under 3M has the next to the LOWEST price of all 7 proof coins. Could someone with much more experience than I explain this peculiarity? Is the 2004 proof Sac worth accumulating for investment purposes? confused-smiley-013.gif

I don't think anything with a mintage in the millions is much worth investing in.

I would guess that the pricing of the individual coins is directly related to what that year's whole proof set sells for. Take the 2001 as an example.

Wow, cracks in a modern proof. thumbsup2.gif Yeah, I'd call that an error.

As to the price of the 2004, I agree with Victor, ANY modern proof is going to look UCAM 68-70, so with a mintage in the high two millions it's pretty much a big whoop-te-do, snore.

That's the whole point. WHY does the 2001 Sac make that set when there are fewer 2004 proof Sacs than 2001 proof Sacs? Why doesn't the 2004 proof Sac make THAT set? The raw 2001 proof Sac is $75 raw, the lower mintage 2004 proof Sac in $5.50 (I'm assuming his mintage figures are correct. I don't have figures past 2003.)

Last month, I asked a similar question about the price of the 2001 proof. It just makes no sense to me. I won an NGC PR67 back in November from a well known coin auction, not eBay, for $14.00 plus fees and shipping. I was surprised when it actually showed up, knowing the dealer had made a mistake. Glad to have it, just no idea why it is valued so high.
