Not a familiar term (Bungtown Forgery) for me Dooly.....Of course, what do we know about hay-pennies on this side of the pond ??

Bungtown is a term for counterfeit British halfpence produced at an unknown American mint location. There are also counterfeit British halfpence struck at known american locations such and Machins Mill, and the Rahway mint. And finally there are counterfiet British halfpence struck in English mint locations. (Mostly around Birmingham.) I can't always even be sure which are fake and which are real without weighing them. (The counterfeits are almost always light weight.) And I definitely couldn't tell where they were made without the proper reference books and a lot more study. I do think it would be an interesting area to study though.

And Paul, the early copper people do know a fair amount about them because for about a hundred and fifty years they were the principal small coinage that circulated here in this country. Both genuine and counterfeit.
