Leave the coins in orginal proof holder

2 posts in this topic

I hear that NGC is now going to introduce a new holder for the Proof sets that will contain the year and grades. NGC already does the "Brown Ike" in its orginal plastic holder. Just an idea but will NGC also do this with the Modern Proofs that come already in its orginial hard plastic or will NGC use its own holder for the Proof sets? It seems that if they could do it for the Ikes they could also do this for the Modern Proof sets. Not only now are they graded in orginal plastic from the Mint but you also still have the COA that comes with the set. Thanks

Papa G,

NGC has no immediate plans to grade proof coins still in their original proof sets. There are several reasons. First, there being upwards of six coins in any given proof set, there will be coins that have varying grades as well as Cameo, Ultra Cameo, and Non Cameo effects. Since the NGC label that is used for the Ikes and GSA dollars can only support one description with one grade, this method would not be suitable for any set that has any grade variation.

Secondly, due to the spacing of the coins within the proof sets, there is very little room for a tag that could support the necessary information to be placed upon the holder itself.

Lastly, the newest proof sets are not sonically welded as sets in the past have been, thus allowing for the potential ease of tampering that might not be obviously evident.
