1872 Liberty Seated Half Dime Oddity

5 posts in this topic

Hello All,

I just purchased an 1872 LSHD with a bit of a puzzler at the date on the obverse, it looks like some strangeness on the reverse also but without the coin in hand I cannot be sure, but no doubt about the obverse. It appears like an arrow was attempted to be placed at the date and arrow shaft runs behind/under date but as now arrow was on half dime and only on dime that didn't occur until 1873 on Dime so that's out. I do not know for sure what it is. Please take a look at the photo and give me your thoughts on it, also grade if possible from photo. Thanks

I've added a closeup of the date area showing the complete arrow behind the 1872, perhaps that will help should anyone be interested in assisting me in this

From what I see it is one of 2 things. If you'll close to the reverse, the bottom left had ribbon on the bow. This looks like what is under the date to me. It's either a wierd flaw with part rev under the date, or it looks like some camera reflection on the obv. The is my best guess on this Jim. Maybe someone else can lend some more ideas!!
