eek!!!!!! improperly cleaned

3 posts in this topic

I recently submitted some gold coins and had three come back improperly cleaned. Christo_pull_hair.gif My question: Is it possible for these coins to be cleaned properly? In other words is the damage already done or can they still be salvaged? I realize it is a case by case example but, in general, once a coin has been cleaned improperly are they ruined? confused.gif

I am the bearer of bad news. For 99% of coins that will be deemed improperly cleaned by a third party grading service such as NGC, there is nothing that professional conservation would be able to do to reverse that. When a coin is deemed improperly cleaned, original surface metal has been removed. Conservation can not restore that metal. If there are residues or undesirable toning, professional conservation may be able to help those issues, but your coin would still be improperly cleaned.

Thank you, it is as I feared. At least these were purchased before gold went through the roof and melt is at least an option
