1818 Large Cent; Lacquer Removal

2 posts in this topic

Hi,

I have this 1818 Large Cent that has been lacquered. Can I submit the coin in this holder to NCS and then on to NGC? I am a member of the ANA and have the NCS and NGC Coin Conservation/Grading Submission Forms. What are your thoughts on this coin and can NCS handle the lacqer removal safely?

Thanks,

Lee

Lacquer can usually be removed. Red copper coins are sometimes not conserved as removal of the lacquer often causes the natural toning to a brown coin that had been retarded due to the lacquer to occur very rapidly and very unnatractively. Assuming there are not underlying irreversible surface problems on your coin such as improper cleaning or environmental damage, then it could probably be graded by NGC.
